UIW hosted a Commissioning Ceremony for three ROTC cadets on Friday, Dec. 17, 2021. Cadets Ramon Aguilar, Miguel Alejandro Trevino and Ronnie Woods were commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the U.S. Army. The three soldiers graduated from UIW and St. Mary’s University.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that it has entered into new agreements with Incarnate Word High School (IWHS) and St. Anthony Catholic High School (SACHS) to offer new scholarships to students from each school. Under the Memorandums of Understanding, UIW will provide three academic, merit-based scholarships of $25,000 per year for four years to IWHS and SACHS graduating seniors who are in the top 10 percent of their graduating class.

He came from Stockton, California, and his parents grew up in a very different world than he did. They experienced many challenges, and their goal was to ensure that their son did not have to experience those same hardships.

Dr. Dede Rios, director of the Brackenridge Optometry Library, has been recognized for attaining her Distinguished Level credential in the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) by the Medical Library Association. Rios is also a recipient of the Scholarly Communications Award, presented by the Texas Digital Libraries, for her work on the Optometric Clinical Practice, the Rosenberg School of Optometry’s open access, peer-reviewed journal.

This Friday, Dec. 3 marks the 100th anniversary of a milestone moment for the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). On this day in 1921, the cornerstone of UIW’s most iconic building – the Columkille Administration Building was laid. Brother Patrick Tumwine, CSC, is a Ph.D. student in Education at UIW. He brings a rich background to the program, having been a teacher and principal at Holy Cross schools in his native Uganda. But focusing on classes does not keep him too busy to serve. Just the opposite, it has given him a heart to serve both in Uganda and in San Antonio through the Young Women’s Global Leadership program.
Michael Lesley is a U.S. Army veteran, a sophomore Finance major and a student worker in the Military and Veteran Center at UIW. He joined the military in 2015, shortly after he graduated high school, and was active duty for four years. Originally a Vehicle Wheeled Mechanic, an injury forced him to alter his course.
Dr. Norman St. Clair, professor and director of Graduate Studies, and Dr. Deborah Poole, alumna, co-published “Exploring and Developing a Comprehensive Teaching Model for Graduate Ethics,” in Teaching Ethics at The Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum. The journal is dedicated to ethical issues across the curriculum with particular attention to pedagogical methodology and practice in both academic inquiry and professional practice.

Islam’s topic was a “Mathematical model of COVID-19 transmission with vaccination and optimal vaccine allocation strategy with limited supply.”
Robert Pratt, a second-year Physical Therapy major, is at the top of his cohort and is a student ambassador. He says he has worked hard to get where he is today, and he credits his undergraduate career, where he was a pre-PT major and a student-athlete on the UIW men’s soccer team, with his current success.

Dr. Denise Staudt, dean of the Dreeben School of Education, was named the Joyce Hardin Service Award recipient by the Texas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (TACTE) at the Consortium of State Organizations for Teacher Education’s annual Fall Teacher Education Conference. The Joyce Hardin Service Award is presented annually for outstanding service to TACTE and the education profession.
The University of the Incarnate Word's Center for Medical Tourism Research, in collaboration with Centro Fox, is presenting a special seminar titled Strategies for the Development and Management of International Medical Tourism. Dr. David G. Vequist, founder and director of the UIW Center for Medial Tourism Research, and Ilan Geva of the University of Chicago / DePaul University, will present to administrators and clinicians in the public and private medical sector, other medical tourism stakeholders and the general public on Oct. 19 and 22. Ben Garza, a graduate student in UIW’s Nutrition program, grew up in McAllen, Texas but he has grown to love San Antonio. As an undergraduate student at Trinity University looking into what his next steps would be, he began taking more of an interest in his personal health through exercise and nutrition. During one of his Psychology classes, Lifespan Development, he examined how certain foods affect the human body.
Dr. Robyn Phillips-Madson, founding dean and professor of Family Medicine at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine, was the recipient of this year’s Servant of Christ award, given by the San Antonio Christian Medical & Dental Association. Madson will be honored at the association’s 2021 fall banquet on Oct. 19.

The first-year teacher at Walzem Elementary in the Northeast Independent School District was greeted with a surprise celebration on the morning of Wednesday, September 22, 2021 after being named the 2020-21 Texas Clinical Teacher of the Year. Covarrubias, who graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in May of 2021, was celebrated in her classroom for the achievement.
