St. Anthony Students Earn National Academic Recognition

San Antonio – September 29, 2023 – St. Anthony Catholic High School (SACHS) is proud to announce that a group of five students has earned academic honors from the College Board National Recognition Programs. These programs celebrate students’ hard work in high school and showcase their strong academic performance. The academic honors for rural area, Black, Indigenous and/or Latino students are an opportunity for them to share their strong academic achievements with colleges and scholarship programs that are seeking to recruit diverse talent. The honor is based on the student’s PSAT/NMSQT scores and their grade point average.

Lee, a visiting scholar from Korea, is the former President and Publisher of the Korea Times newspaper in Seoul, South Korea. He worked in the publishing business in South Korea for 34 years, including many years covering the Korean presidency and economics.

September 13, 2023 – For the 15th consecutive year, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has been recognized as one of the best universities to work for in the nation according to a new survey by the “Great Colleges to Work For” program. UIW was also named to the publication’s Honor Roll for the 14th straight year. That designation recognizes universities who received top marks in multiple categories and only 42 institutions made the Honor Roll. The results, collected by independent survey company ModernThink and released in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education, are based on a survey of 194 colleges and universities.

Brown, assistant professor in the Dreeben School of Education (DSE), was named a Freedom Scholar Award recipient by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). The association, which was established in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the Father of Black History, is the founding organization of Black History Month and strives to continue the work and legacy of Dr. Woodson.

The Liza and Jack Lewis Center of the Americas at UIW will host the second lecture of the Leaders of the Americas Speaker Series on October 4. The series was created to give the UIW community, students, faculty and staff the opportunity to hear from leaders and dignitaries who have impacted society through their life’s work. The speaker for the 2023 lecture will be Nobel Laureate Rigoberta Menchú Tum, one of the most important champions of native people’s rights in the modern history of the Americas, and particularly of the rights of the K’iché and all Mayan peoples in Menchú’s native Guatemala.

This is how Francisca Zarate, mother of four UIW graduates, described the schedule she kept for her children during time off from school. While weeks away from the classroom during Spring Breaks and Christmas holidays were filled with fun and lots of love, she knew the importance of teaching them to prioritize education, service and faith. Those are the principles that have guided the Zarate family through years of challenges, triumphs and most recently, the celebration of the final Zarate child to graduate from the University of the Incarnate Word.

On a warm summer day in June at UIW’s Feik School of Pharmacy, a tortoise roamed the grounds, having accidentally wandered a bit too far from home. The two-foot reptile was discovered by UIW facilities management staff member Jerry Garsas who instantly fell head over heels for it. The Office of Communications and Brand Marketing then received a call with an unusual request – Will you post a photo of this tortoise on social media to see if we can find its home?
