Originally interested in drawing and printmaking, Hansen began casting aluminum and bronze at Trenton state College in 1974 and has focused on three dimensional work ever since. In 1982, Hansen moved to New Mexico to work as a potter with friends. In 1985, Hansen enrolled at the University of New Mexico to complete his BFA with a focus on ceramics and sculpture. In 1989 he chose the University of Texas at San Antonio for graduate studies to work with Ken Little and Steve Reynolds and work as the ceramics studio technician. Hansen has exhibited works in clay and wood extensively in the San Antonio area including many shows at the the Blue Star Gallery.

Hansen has taught classes in sculpture and ceramics as an adjunct instructor at UTSA , three of the colleges in the Alamo Community College district and at the Southwest School of Art since 1992. He has taught ceramics classes at UIW for the last five years.
