Christopher McCollum joined the faculty of Incarnate Word in 2015 as scenic designer. Prior to UIW he was on the faculty at Oberlin College. He graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University with a B.F.A. in Design and he is a proud member of the United Scenic Artists Union, Local 829 and USITT. A native of Austin, Texas, he spent the early part of his professional career assisting various designers in New York and Europe, on productions at some of the world’s leading opera companies. While working as a freelance set and costume designer in Austin, he designed for most of the performing arts companies based there. For six seasons he served as Resident Scenic Designer at Theatre Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Many of his designs have been used by opera and ballet companies all over the United States. For Houston Grand Opera, her created the scenery for the first major production of the opera Little Women by Mark Adamo, which was broadcast on PBS’ Great Performances. He has received numerous local awards for his design work in Austin, Memphis, and San Antonio. In 2010, he received a Professional Artist Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission in recognition of his consistent, outstanding work as a designer.
