Lecturer Music

Dr. Janet Tracy is the Applied Tuba and Euphonium Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word where she also teaches Brass Methods, Music Theory and Creative Curriculum (elementary music). She is the low brass specialist for the North East and Alamo Heights Independent School Districts serving as a clinician, sectional coach and private instructor. Dr. Tracy holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from the University of Oklahoma - Norman, a Master of Music in Tuba Performance from Oklahoma City University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Tuba Performance from the University of Texas - Austin. She is a freelance musician in central and south Texas where she performs both as a soloist and as an ensemble artist. Dr. Tracy is a contemporary music specialist who has commissioned and premiered numerous works. She raised a corporate commission for composer Anthony Plog to write his Tuba Sonata which she premiered at the Regional Tuba - Euphonium Conference held at the University of Texas - Austin. Dr. Tracy has performed throughout the United States and Europe, both as a soloist and as a collaborative musician. She is a founding member of the Athena Brass Band, the internationally acclaimed all women’s British brass band. She is the leader and business manager for the Olmos Basin Brass Quintet, and she performs with the San Antonio Brass Band. She has performed with the San Antonio Symphony, Mid Texas Symphony, the Victoria Symphony and San Antonio Symphony Viva. She has recorded sound tracks for various radio stations and sound effects for record tracks. She has served on the Board of Directors for the International Women’s Brass Conference and has been an adjudicator for competitions at the IWBC conferences. Dr. Tracy’s teachers and mentors include Steve Bryant, Michael Sanders, Don Little, Larry Bird, Denis Bubert, Daniel Perantoni and Arnold Jacobs.

Dr. Tracy and George Fahlund gave a joint presentation at the 2025 International Society of Bassists Conference at Florida State University - Tallahassee: “Private Lessons: Private Teaching as a Profession”.

Dr. Tracy presented a lecture at the 2019 International Women’s Brass Conference at Arizona State University - Tempe: “Song and Wind, Adapting the Teachings of Arnold Jacobs for Young Brass Players”.

Dr. Tracy enjoys singing, swimming, crafting and kayaking. She and her husband George enjoy living in San Antonio with their two dogs and two cats.
