What is STEM Designated?

All of us here at The University of the Incarnate Word are dedicated to ensuring that our international students are welcomed, valued, and are able to take full advantage of the time and resources that are available to them while in the United States.

One way to gain some additional time and work experience in the US is through Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows international students to gain professional experience in the US for up to 12 months after graduation in their field of study.

If the program that the student graduated from is in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), as designated by Department of Homeland Security, the student may be eligible to apply for an additional 24 months of OPT.

We know its a complicated process, but our International Student and Scholar Services Team is always willing to help! ISSS hosts webinars as well as one-on-one chats with students interested in applying for OPT. You can head over to the Work Authorization page with any additional questions.
