Bachelor of Science in Statistics

The Bachelor of Science in Statistics readies students to excel in a fast-growing profession that spans industries. With an emphasis on mathematics, logic, analysis and computer language, graduates are prepared to be successful and effective statistics professionals.

 

Why Statistics?

As statistics and data become more available and increasingly important for businesses, government, healthcare, energy and resources, marketing and a variety of other sectors, the demand for statistics professionals will continue to grow. Strong mathematical, qualitative research and analysis skills, as well as good communication skills, are sought after qualities that UIW statistics students work to build throughout their program.

 

Statistics Curriculum

The B.S. in Statistics is a rigorous, 120-hour program. The 30-hour core, which includes courses in higher mathematics, probability and statistics, design and analysis, provides a strong foundation in calculation, logic and problem solving. The format of the B.S. in Statistics gives students the flexibility to pursue coursework in a variety of branches of statistics by selecting multiple statistics electives (9 hours), or to pursue a minor or major in another discipline. Students are also required to take one computer language course.

Throughout their program, statistics students can find support for their studies through the Math Tutoring Lab and faculty members.

Careers in Statistics

Career prospects for statistics majors are bright. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for statisticians is 31 percent through 2028, far outpacing the standard 5 percent job growth rate for all occupations. The field shows no signs of slowing. As a result of this growing emphasis by businesses and other sectors on data-informed decisions, statistics majors may find employment in a wide range of fields. Many find work with government agencies and through the military.
