The Asian New Year is celebrated at UIW. Attendees get to observe various forms of dance and music, sample a variety of various types of Asian cuisine, and view cultural presentations and a fashion show. The festival includes participation from the San Antonio Lion Dance Association, Chinese Culture Performance Association, Japan America Society of San Antonio, the UIW Asian Culture Club, and the UIW History Club.
The Cutting Edge Fashion show features student designers from the UIW Fashion Design program. Student designers plan and produce their collection while enrolled in the fashion design capstone courses during their senior year. This annual event is produced entirely by merchandising and design students – from sound and lighting, to staging and contracting professional models – students experience every aspect of planning and implementing a professional runway fashion show.

The nursing faculty and administration of the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions hold a pinning ceremony to honor their graduates. The pinning ceremony is a nursing tradition from the time of Florence Nightingale in the late 1800s that signified that the individual completed the requirements from the nursing education program. As part of the pinning ceremony, the graduates also recite a modernized Nightingale Pledge that is based on principles and ethics of the nursing profession.
Part of Welcome Week. Meet new and returning students and receive a special welcome from UIW administrators, faculty, and student leaders. The evening starts with a special pinning ceremony to commemorate your new chapter at UIW and a reception to immediately follow. We invite all new students and their parents or spouse to attend. Sponsored by Campus Life, Student Government Association, and University Mission & Ministry at the McDermott Convocation Center.
