Striving to Provide Impactful Care to All: Spring 2026 Graduate Carlos Angel Reyes
his spring 2026, the University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) School of Rehabilitation Sciences (SRS) is proud to celebrate its inaugural graduating class from the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. From newborn babies to the elderly, these future doctors will provide quality care to their patients, helping them overcome challenges. One of these inaugural graduates is Carlos Angel Reyes.
Reyes was inspired to pursue a career as an Occupational Therapist based on the field’s holistic and meaningful approach to care. He admired its adaptability to address a variety of patient needs by providing physical, mental, individualized and client-centered care. Wanting to help patients return to the activities that give them purpose, Reyes followed his call to heal.
While searching for the right institution to study at, Reyes came across SRS. Admiring UIW’s strong emphasis on service, community engagement and holistic care, he knew he had found the right place for him.
As a first-generation occupational therapy student, it is both an honor and a profound responsibility to Reyes. For him, it’s not just about being the first in his family to navigate an unfamiliar path, but also his opportunity to contribute to the foundation that future generations will build upon.
“Throughout this journey, my faith has remained a constant source of strength, guidance and purpose, sustaining me through challenges and shaping my growth,” shared Reyes. “This achievement holds deep meaning as it represents not only personal success, but also the opportunity to open doors for my family and to serve others with compassion, humility and intention.”
During his time at UIW, Reyes has learned and grown in exceptional ways. His fieldwork experiences have been especially impactful for him, as they allowed him to translate his academic knowledge into clinical practice, refine his skills and develop confidence in delivering patient-centered care. He noted that studying at UIW has helped him strengthen his clinical reasoning, professionalism and commitment to service. He added that personally, his journey at SRS has fostered resilience, adaptability and a deeper sense of responsibility as a future healthcare provider.
“I wish more people understood that occupational therapy extends far beyond basic daily tasks,” noted Reyes. “It plays a critical role in promoting independence, supporting mental health and enabling individuals to fully participate in meaningful life roles. I aim to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care that promotes independence, dignity and meaningful participation in daily life, while continuing to grow clinically and contribute positively within interdisciplinary teams.”
With commencement on the horizon, Reyes is proud to receive his Doctorate in Occupational Therapy as it represents years of discipline, growth and dedication. Additionally, this degree signifies his transition into professional practice – finally able to make a tangible impact on the lives of others. After graduation, Reyes will prepare to take and pass the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam so he can begin his career in acute care or rehabilitation.
As Reyes prepares to make his dreams a reality, he reflects fondly at his time at the Nest and leaves his heart felt message:
“It is a privilege to be part of an inaugural group that is helping establish the foundation and legacy of the program. There is a strong sense of pride in contributing to something that will continue to grow and impact future students. I am deeply grateful for the support, mentorship and opportunities provided throughout this journey. This achievement reflects not only individual effort but also the strength and impact of the UIW community.”
Congratulations, Carlos Angel Reyes, OTD!
