VA Educational Benefits

The Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (MGIB-AD) provides education and training benefits to Veterans who have served at least two years on active duty. This program can help cover the costs of college, technical, or vocational education programs. This benefit is a monthly stipend that is paid directly to the student, and does not directly pay tuition and fees.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E), also known as Chapter 31, is designed to support Veterans with service-connected disabilities that impact their ability to work. This is an employment program that often contains educational components, however is not a ensured benefit. This program helps you explore career options and access the education or training you need to succeed.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill®, also known as Chapter 33, provides education and training benefits to Veterans who have served on active duty after September 10, 2001. This program can help pay for school or cover costs while you’re training for a new career.

Chapter 35, also known as the Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program, offers education and training benefits to eligible dependents of certain Veterans and service members. If you are the child or spouse of a Veteran who is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition. If the Veteran has died, is missing in action, or was captured in the line of duty, you may also qualify for this support. This benefit is a monthly stipend that is paid directly to the student.

The Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) provides up to 36 months of education and training benefits for eligible members of the Reserve and National Guard. If you’re currently serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard Reserve, or in the Army or Air National Guard, you may qualify for this program.

The Department of Defense (DOD) Federal Tuition Assistance Program (TA) provides financial assistance to current service members for education programs. TA is available for courses offered in the classroom or by distance learning as long as they are part of an approved academic degree program.

Determine your eligibility and benefit type with the Department of Veterans Affairs

Apply online at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website or by calling 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551).

Apply to the UIW academic program of your choice:

Broadway Campus Admissions or School of Professional Studies

If you are a new student, you may be required to complete New Student Orientation (NSO) before you can register. Check your student portal or contact the Office of Admissions for more information.

For Federal benefits, ensure that the courses you are registering for are required for your degree plan. If course(s) reflect on your DegreeWorks as "Additional" then the VA will only pay for courses required on your degree plan.

Students must be registered for classes before requesting benefits. If paperwork is submitted before the student is registered for classes, then the office will reject the paperwork and will result in a required resubmission.

Each Federal benefit has specific documentation requirements. Use our Federal Benefits Checklist to make sure you have everything you need—this may include your Certificate of Eligibility, military service documents, and other supporting forms.

Federal Checklist

1. Once logged in, use the magnifying glass to search for "VA Certification." This will be located in the Military and Veterans Center Tile. 
2. Select "VA Certification" to open the form
3. Follow the questions until you get to the document upload page. 

Tuition Assistance (TA) Users: 
Any student eligible to use Tuition Assistance (TA) from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and Space Force must submit the approved and signed TA form to the Business Office for processing. Students who fail to turn in their approved TA forms will be held responsible for the balance.
