Background: Since 2006, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has hosted the Red Dress Fashion Show. Organizers say the purpose of the annual event is to raise awareness of heart health in women because heart attacks have different symptoms in women than in men.Red DressThe Red Dress Fashion show features designs created by UIW students and fashion students from area high schools who are also competing for scholarships from the UIW Fashion Management Program. UIW fashion students compete for a total of $6,000 in scholarship money while high school students who win each receive a $1,000 scholarship. “Several UIW students started working on their Red Dress garment for this year in the Summer,” says Dr. Melinda Adams, professor and program director for the UIW Fashion Management Department. “They have been working for several months to create a showstopper to win first place. We look forward to this event every year. It is for a great cause and it allows the students to share their creativity, designs and hard work with the public. I can’t wait to see what the students come up with this year.” In addition, this year’s fashion show is partnering with the organization Daisy Cares which is a national non-profit created to provide pet food, urgent or emergent funding aid toward veterinary care and reduce animal abuse through animal welfare education and awareness. Fashion show attendees are being asked to bring a pet toy or pet treats and a Daisy Cares representative will be on hand to collect the items and raise awareness of their services.
