Gurwitz International Piano Competition – January 26th through February 4th, 2024

The Gurwitz seeks to discover the next generation of top young pianists from around the world with four rounds of competition and a unique focus to bridge classical piano with world music. All rounds of competition and a featured jazz concert are free & open to the public via ticket registration. There are additionally a number of high-quality paid events available to the public. The University of the Incarnate Word is a proud sponsor and is pleased to be hosting the first two rounds of the competition at the Diane Bennack Concert, located at the Luella Bennack Music Center of UIW’s main campus.

Round 1: Free Tickets

  • Day 1: Saturday, Jan. 27, 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. CST, UIW Diane Bennack Concert Hall | Campus Map
  • Day 2: Sunday, Jan. 28: 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. CST, UIW Diane Bennack Concert Hall | Campus Map

Contestants will each perform a 50-minute recital, with 10-minute breaks between each performance. Audiences are encouraged but not required to stay for the full 3-hour sessions and may leave during 10-minute breaks between recitals.

These events are not at UIW but are free of charge to the public. Please note that registration is required.

Round 3 finalists will perform newly commissioned chamber music by San Antonio composer Dr. Aron Prado, titled El Colibrí y la Cempasúchil(The Hummingbird and the Marigold), inspired by an Aztec myth that connects to the Día de los Muertos. This chamber work will be performed with an ensemble of acclaimed  guest artists from the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Round 4 finalists will perform full piano concertos with the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of artistic director Scott Yoo, renowned violinist and host of the PBS TV series “Now Hear This”.
