Welcome to FLIGHT Peer Mentoring

Growing together, Flying higher.

Starting college is a big deal — exciting, a bit scary, and sometimes overwhelming. We totally get it. New places, new people, and so much to figure out all at once.

But here’s the good news: at UIW, you’re never flying solo! Our FLIGHT Peer Mentors are like your personal guides to life in The Nest. FLIGHT peer mentors are friendly, knowledgeable students who’ve been in your shoes and want to help you find your way. Whether you have a quick question, need some advice, or just want someone to chat with, they’re here for you from day one.

Think of them as your go-to crew, ready to help you settle in, get connected, and feel like you really belong. Because you do!

How Can FLIGHT Peer Mentors Help?

Get Around & Get Settled
Starting out, it’s easy to feel lost — like, where do I even go? Whether you’re trying to find the Mabee Library, figure out where the Student Engagement Center is, or just want a quick tour of campus spots, your mentor’s got you. They’ll help you get comfy with your new surroundings and show you all the hidden gems on campus that make UIW feel like home.

Academic Boost
College comes with a lot of studying, deadlines, and new ways of learning. If you need a hand with organizing your schedule, finding tutoring options, or tips on how to tackle those tricky assignments, FLIGHT Mentors are ready to help.

Make Friends & Connections
Making new friends can sometimes feel a little intimidating. But don’t worry, your mentor is also your hookup for campus life! From social events and mixers to student groups and clubs, they’ll connect you with fun activities and people who’ll turn this big campus into your new community.

When Life Feels Overwhelming
Feeling homesick? Stressed out? Not sure where to turn? Everyone hits rough patches, and that’s totally normal. FLIGHT Mentors have been there, too...they’ll listen, offer support, and help you figure out how to get through it. You’re not alone in this journey.

FLIGHT FAQ's

FLIGHT stands for Financial Literacy, Integrated Guidance, and Health career Tracts — but really, it’s all about helping you succeed. It’s a program made up of three key parts that work together to support you on your journey toward earning your degree and reaching your goals.

Even though Health Career Tracts is part of the name, FLIGHT Mentoring is open to students from all majors and areas of study. No matter what you’re studying, you’re welcome to reach out and get involved!

A FLIGHT Peer Mentor is a fellow student, usually someone who’s a bit ahead of you in their studies, who’s completed training to support their peers. You’ll often find Peer Mentors in your First-Year Experience Seminar (FYES) class, academic labs, or student services offices, ready to lend a hand or just chat..

The FLIGHT Mentor Center is in the Administration Building, Suite 212. If you want to drop by, the FLIGHT Mentor Center Director, Mercedes Torrez, is happy to help you out!

Understanding money stuff isn’t just for finance majors, it’s important for everyone. FLIGHT mentors help you learn how to manage your finances, plan your budget, and make smart money decisions so you can feel confident about your financial future.

Think of an advisor as the person who helps you plan your classes and academic path, kind of like your roadmap planner. A mentor is more like your personal coach, focusing on your overall wellbeing and long-term success, both in college and beyond. Advisors help you figure out what to do, while mentors support you in how to do it and encourage you along the way. Sometimes, one person might wear both hats!

Remember, at UIW you have access to both! You can find your advisors at the University Advising Center and FLIGHT Mentors are just a click away through the directory.
