Karl S. Furmaga

Karl S. Furmaga serves as Deputy General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer at the University of the Incarnate Word. Before assuming this position, Mr. Furmaga served as Senior Counsel and Chief Risk Officer, and previously as Associate Counsel. Mr. Furmaga is a licensed attorney, licensed risk manager and licensed all-lines insurance adjuster.

Mr. Furmaga graduated from Williams College in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, and a concentration in Legal Studies. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 2013 from the University of Houston Law Center, where he served as an editor for the Houston Business & Tax Law Journal, was a member of the Moot Court team, and received the Lex Highest Grade award in legal research and writing.

Following law school, Mr. Furmaga worked in private practice for ten years, representing individuals and entities in a wide range of matters including contract disputes, premises liability, products liability, construction defect, workers compensation, personal injury, general insurance defense, and regulatory compliance. Mr. Furmaga also handled various transactional matters and prepared various contractual documents to facilitate business operations and minimize operational risk. In 2022, Mr. Furmaga was recognized in the Scene in S.A.’s “Best S.A. Lawyers” list and was featured in the “In Recess” section of the Texas Bar Journal (Vol. 85, No. 3). Before joining the Office of General Counsel, Mr. Furmaga was a partner at a reputable full-service litigation law firm in San Antonio. Mr. Furmaga has been admitted to the State Bar of Texas and the United States District Court for the Western, Southern, and Eastern Districts of Texas.    

Outside the law, Mr. Furmaga enjoys playing tennis and staying active. He is a USPTA-certified tennis coach, a USTA-certified tennis official, and an NASM-certified personal trainer. Mr. Furmaga also enjoys traveling and is fluent in Polish.
