UIW to Host Fashion + Form + Function Show and Competition

February 27, 2026

Previous show participantOn Sunday, March 1, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) will host the student fashion showcase, Fashion + Form + Function, at 3 p.m. in the Joeris Ballroom, located in the Student Engagement Center. Formerly known as the Red Dress Fashion Show, this event will gather talented fashion designers from UIW’s Fashion program and local San Antonio high schools, as their uniquely designed garments are showcased during a runway-style show.

This year’s show theme “Anything BUT Red” challenges this year’s participants to “think beyond the obvious.” The theme intentionally leaves room for creative interpretation, leaving opportunities to explore ranging color scales, jewel types, statement pieces and more. However, it also encourages designers to dig deeper, considering factors such as literary interpretations, cultural symbolism, emotional narratives, historical references, linguistic play and nature reinvented.

Based on the quality and creativity of their designs, participating students will have the opportunity to win scholarship money. Judges will evaluate entries based on creativity, technical skill, theme interpretation and overall presentation (uiw.edu).

Previous show participant“There is nothing quite like watching emerging designers from high school through college bring their creative visions to life on the runway,” shared Lalon Alexander, PhD, Fashion Management associate professor and department chair. “This year's theme, 'Anything BUT Red!', is a genuine creative challenge: we're asking designers to question assumptions, push boundaries and show us what fashion looks like when you throw out the rulebook.”

The event will also host special guest speaker Head of Design for San Antonio Shoes, Jesse Daniels. Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring dog and cat toy donations, as this event will be partnering with Daisy Cares, a non-profit organization created to “provide pet food and urgent or emergent aid toward veterinary care and reduce animal abuse through animal welfare education and awareness” (daisycares.com).

“The talent and energy in the room will be extraordinary!” expressed Alexander. “This is a show you don't want to miss.”
