May 15, 2019

San Antonio - The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) Athletics Department and Ortho San Antonio have formed a partnership for sports medicine announced Director of Athletics Dr. Brian Wickstrom on Wednesday, May 15, 2019.

“We are excited about this new partnership. Our decision to work with Ortho San Antonio is about aligning with UIW’s strategic priority of strengthening the bond with the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word while continuing to receive top-notch care for our student-athletes,” said Wickstrom. “I want to thank Sports Medicine Associates for their great student-athlete care over the past several years. Dr. Paul Saenz, Dr. Bud Curtis, and Dr. Daniel Santa Maria are outstanding individuals and always provided the best care.”

Currently, UIW Athletics uses Ortho San Antonio clinics for both clinical and surgical observational educational rotations. Through this collaboration, the clinic becomes the new day-to-day medical provider for all 23 Division I athletic teams, consisting of approximately 600 student-athletes at UIW.

"We are very excited to partner with the University of the Incarnate Word and we look forward to providing the highest-quality sports medicine care for its student-athletes. UIW is building its brand both locally and nationally, and we could not pass up the opportunity to align with them in those efforts. In the short amount of time Dr. Wickstrom has led UIW Athletics, we have seen a positive transformation in all aspects of the department, and we believe this partnership will help support the Cardinals’ upward trajectory," said Dr. Rudy Navarro of Ortho San Antonio.

This coverage provides 24-hour care for the Cardinals, including campus training room clinics, coverage for both home and road sporting events, orthopaedic and general medical care, MRIs, x-rays, advanced imaging and physicals. Additionally, the partnership includes medical directorship for UIW’s athletic training program.

“I am very excited for our student-athletes to have access to sports medicine care from professionals who are recognized nationally for their areas of expertise,” said UIW head football coach Eric Morris.
