UIW places 104 Student Athletes on Southland’s Fall 2018 Commissioner’s Honor Roll

February 1, 2019

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word athletics department placed a record 104 student-athletes on the Fall 2018 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the Southland Conference office announced Thursday. This tops the previous record of 101 student-athletes on a Fall Commissioner’s Honor Roll list (2015).

“I’m proud of the student-athletes who earned this honor,” Director of Athletics Dr. Brian Wickstrom said. “Our student-athletes work hard in competition, in the community and in the classroom. We are excited to continue working hard as we strive to be a premier Division I university.”

The Fall Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognizes student-athletes in the sports of men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, women’s soccer and volleyball who maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average in the semester of their sport.

The 104 student-athletes ranked third in the Southland Conference, up one spot from 2017, when the Cardinals had 98 honorees in the 2017 Fall Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Fifteen Cardinals across the five sports achieved a 4.0 GPA: five from volleyball, three from women’s soccer, three from women’s cross country, two from football, and two from men’s cross country.

The men’s cross-country program had a league-high 14 student-athletes (tied with Central Arkansas) with a 3.0 or higher GPA, while the women ranked second with 13 honorees (100 percent of the team). In women’s soccer, UIW had 26 student-athletes on the list, another conference-leading number (tied with Abilene Christian).
