Study Teacher Education at UIW

San Antonio – Since 1881, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has been preparing individuals for a profession in which they can directly affect society in significant and positive ways. The emphasis of the UIW Teacher Education program incorporates a broad liberal arts education as a foundation for the more in-depth focus on academic teaching specializations and the body of knowledge associated with the teaching and learning process.

Teacher Education is a field-based program that provides intensive high-quality experiences in settings where preservice teachers can integrate theory with practice, observe effective teaching practices, embrace diversity and develop their teaching in collaboration with university faculty.

At the undergraduate level, the Interdisciplinary Studies degree prepares students for elementary (EC-6) teaching with a reading minor and special education coursework. Secondary certification (7-12) and all-level certification (EC-12) candidates major in their intended teaching field and minor in education. At the graduate level, candidates accepted to the Graduate Studies Program pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree.  The M.A.T. degree provides options to certify in elementary education (EC-6), secondary education (7-12), and all-level education (EC-12).  All candidates are prepared with a commitment to living the UIW mission by meeting the needs of diverse learners in diverse settings.

Students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program who plan to pursue initial teaching certification must also formally apply, and be admitted, to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) before enrolling in professional development coursework.

Graduates of UIW’s Teacher Education Program continue their professional development with the continued support of the UIW Teacher Network, an induction program with a dedicated focus on teachers in their first three years of their professional practice.  The network is comprised of UIW graduates, novice and experienced, to continue professional development throughout their careers.  Graduates of UIW’s Teacher Education Program work in schools both public and private and are changing lives one student at a time.
