UIW Celebrates the Class of 2015

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) will confer degrees to over 1000 graduates at four spring commencement ceremonies this spring. 

The commencement schedule is as follows:

-Feik School of Pharmacy – Friday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m.; UIW Convocation Center

-Rosenberg School of Optometry – Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m.; UIW Convocation Center

-UIW School of Physical Therapy – Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m.; UIW Convocation Center

-Undergraduate, Graduate and Ph.D., Commencement – Saturday, May 9 at 6 p.m.; Joe & Harry Freeman Coliseum (3201 E. Houston St., San Antonio, TX 78219)

The UIW School of Physical Therapy will present 59 students as its inaugural graduating class at the Saturday afternoon commencement.

Physical therapists are primary health care experts in the movement and function of the human body. The UIW School of Physical Therapy is committed to educating physical therapists as primary health care professionals prepared to function in diverse global environments as knowledgeable, competent, compassionate, caring, resourceful, confident, ethical and legal practitioners.

The School of Physical Therapy follows the long tradition of health care excellence at the University of the Incarnate Word and is one of only two DPT programs offered in a Catholic institution in the southern tier of the United States.

The Saturday evening commencement will honor students earning their bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.  This year’s Commencement speaker is United States Senator for Texas John Cornyn.

A native San Antonian, Cornyn is serving his third term representing Texas in the U.S. Senate. Prior to his election to the Senate, Cornyn served in Texas as Bexar County district judge, a member of the Texas Supreme Court, and as Texas Attorney General. Cornyn has distinguished himself as a leader in the Senate on a variety of issues important to Texans and is a strong supporter of higher education.

The 2015 Alumna of Distinction for Service in Mission is Jessica Davila-Burnett.  She holds an associate’s degree from Del Mar College, a Bachelor of Arts from UIW’s Adult Degree Completion Program at Del Mar College as well as a master’s degree in organizational development from UIW Online.

Burnett has been recognized internationally, nationally and locally for her achievements in community service. She was named among the Top 10 Most Amazing Women in the 2004 September Issue of Latina Magazine. She received the 2004 KRIS-TV 6 and Corpus Christi Caller-Times Jefferson Medallion Award, and the 2004 Campus Ministry Award from UIW for outstanding community service. She was named the 2007 Corpus Christi “Under Forty” Person of the Year. In 2011, Del Mar College inducted Burnett into the Del Mar Wall of Honor and the Leadership Corpus Christi Alumni Association recognized her and a friend as the LCCA Alumni of the Year.

Admission to commencement ceremonies is by ticket only. Commencement will also be broadcast online.  Live coverage of the events will begin 15 minutes prior to the event at http://uiwtv.org/index.php/commencement/.

Processional and recessional music will be performed by the San Antonio Pipes and Drums.

Parking will be available on the UIW campus with overflow parking at AT&T located between Allensworth & Groveland. Limited handicapped/ADA parking will be available in the area directly adjacent to the convocation center between the UIW Solar House and the softball field.
