Ways to Engage With Our Students
Our career fairs bring together hundreds of UIW students and alumni actively seeking internship, part-time and full-time opportunities. These events provide employers with direct access to a diverse pool of motivated candidates across a wide range of academic disciplines. Career fairs are held each semester.
UIW Career Services is pleased to offer employers the ability to conduct on-campus recruiting and interviews through our office. This service allows you to streamline your hiring process by meeting with pre-screened, qualified candidates right here on campus. Our team will work with you to coordinate scheduling and ensure a seamless experience.
Tabling events offer an effective way to increase your organization's visibility among UIW students. Set up a table in one of our high-traffic campus areas and engage directly with students. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce your brand, share information about your industry and begin building a recruiting pipeline early.
Coffee Chats provide an informal, conversational setting for employer representatives to connect one-on-one or in small groups with UIW students. These sessions are ideal for sharing insights about your industry, discussing career pathways and offering professional guidance. Coffee Chats can be hosted virtually or in person.
Partnering with UIW faculty, employers have the opportunity to present directly to students within the classroom setting. These presentations allow you to speak to a targeted audience aligned with your hiring needs, share real-world perspectives on your industry and establish credibility as an employer.
General Guiding Principles
The University of Incarnate Word understands the importance of building a partnership of common goals between individual students hired and the employing organization. The Office of Career Services at UIW is instrumental in achieving a successful match between both parties. Employers who post jobs, attend a career fair, or recruit on campus at UIW must adhere toEqual Employment Opportunity (EEO)guidelines and the National Association of Colleges and Employers(NACE) Principles for Employment Professionals, and the Policies and UIW Guidelines listed on this page.
There are basic foundation principles applied to guide career planning and recruitment and that is to provide job candidates the opportunity to make choices that will optimize their talents and meet their personal objectives through an open and free selection of employment and experience-based learning. It is also significant to establish and maintain a fair and equitable recruitment process and lend support to help candidates make informed and responsible decisions regarding their employment.
In providing an open and free selection of students for employment and experiential learning opportunities, UIW’s Career Services Office reserves the right to take appropriate and necessary actions to enforce compliance with the above guidelines, maintaining a fair and equitable recruitment process among all students employed by UIW.
Employers offering positions that provide compensation that is 100% commission-based can offer these positions under the following conditions:
The position is for full-time employment
The compensation is clearly disclosed in the position description
Charge no fees to the candidates
Unpaid Internships and Academic Credit
Whether you are developing an internship program or offering a one-time internship opportunity, you should be aware thatthe Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Divisiondeveloped a six-factor test for determining whether workers are to be considered “interns” or “employees” under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The guidelines below will help you determine if the position should be considered an unpaid/credit internship or a paid part-time job. By following these guidelines, you will be sure to be in compliance with the criteria set forth by the FLSA.
The internship, even though it includes the actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in an educational environment.
The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern.
The interns do not displace regular employees but work under close observation.
The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the interns and on occasion, the employer’s operations may actually be impeded.
The interns are not necessarily entitled to a job at the completion of the internship period.
The employer and the interns understand that the interns are not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship.
We value your interest in recruiting UIW students and working with us to develop meaningful career opportunities for our students.
