UIW Welcomes the Class of 2029 During Summer Orientations

August 8, 2025

The Broadway campus falls silent during the summer season as Cardinals have flocked back home to relax and recharge for their summer vacations. Although students have yet to return to the Nest for the new academic year, the UIW Admissions team has been hard at work welcoming UIW’s latest class of incoming students – the Graduating Class of 2029.

This summer, the Admissions team hosted 10 New Student Orientations from June through August, welcoming 1,162 future Cardinals and 1,327 supporting guests.

“UIW New Student Orientation gives students a chance to get familiar with campus resources, meet peers and start building a support system before classes begin,” explained Admissions Event Manager, Jose Saavedra. “It sets the tone for a successful transition to college life.”

Upon their arrival, attendees were warmly welcomed by the Admissions team, Mission and Ministry and the Cheer and Dance Team in the Student Engagement Center. The day’s festivities were thoughtfully coordinated to help introduce students to their new “home away from home.”

Students participated in campus tours, met representatives from academic departments, met their fellow classmates while engaging in fun ice breakers. They were also introduced to the University’s numerous resources that they can take advantage of during the pursuit of their academic goals. As students’ most valued support systems, joining family members were also reassured of how UIW will support their students as they are taught to become concerned and enlightened citizens within the global community.

“My favorite part of Orientation was Cardinal Camp. When our orientation student leaders led small group activities with incoming students,” noted Saavedra. “It is an engaging and meaningful time that allows new students to build connections, ask questions and get excited about their college journey. I saw students participate in fun ice breakers that help break down the barrier and create a sense of community.”

By the end of orientation season, Saavedra was pleased to see the level of leadership student orientation leaders demonstrated when welcoming incoming students and was hopeful that incoming students felt excited about officially joining the Incarnate Word family.

Before the new academic year starts, Saavedra wanted to share this message with UIW’s newest additions:

“I want to welcome all the incoming students to the Nest! Remember to ask questions, get involved, and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. You have a community behind you every step of the way!”
