UIW Partners with CHRISTUS for McDermott Center Court Upgrades

May 3, 2019

SAN ANTONIO -- Thanks to a partnership with CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) athletics department has received the fourth-largest donation in UIW Athletics history. The commitment will be used to install a new court in the Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center. The project is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2019.

“We are very excited to partner with CHRISTUS and we look forward to growing our partnership with them,” said UIW Sister Kathleen Coughlin, CCVI. “This is another step towards improving the experience of our student-athletes, and I’d like to thank Dr. Brian Wickstrom and Dr. Thomas Evans for their help in making this idea become a reality. We want to continue building the brand of our university, and projects like this will help us be recognized as a premier Catholic institution.”

To honor the generosity of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, the basketball/volleyball court will carry the organization’s namesake (CHRISTUS Court), with branding on the surface.

“This is a fantastic development for our student-athletes,” said basketball Head Coach Dr. Carson Cunningham. “For a student-athlete's body, the benefits of a state-of-the-art floor, one with excellent resilience, cushioning, and durability, are plentiful and long-lasting. Big ups to our President Dr. Thomas Evans, AD Brian Wickstrom, Special Assistant to the President, Sister Kathleen Coughlin, and the incredible CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System for making this happen.”

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System is about people. People they meet and care for; people whose lives they enhance, and those whose lives they save. CHRISTUS is about the people who work there: their award-winning medical associates, dedicated housekeeping associates, compassionate nurses and patient-focused ancillary associates.  They're about people who need them, from small bumps to massive trauma, no matter their economic bracket. They're about the people of San Antonio, New Braunfels, and all the South Texas communities they serve. Since 1869, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System has grown and flourished just as South Texas has grown. They remain the only Catholic faith-based, non-profit health care system in San Antonio and New Braunfels. Their healing ministry now includes five full-service hospitals with 1,159 licensed beds, and a number of specialty centers.

“We are proud to partner with the University of the Incarnate Word in encouraging education, excellence and a commitment to our Catholic tradition.  We believe UIW shares our commitment to the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa mission of extending the healing ministry and compassion of Jesus Christ,” said Dean Alexander, CEO and President of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System.

The project will include installation of a 12,000 square foot floor with better grade maple and will have a new subfloor system. The new court will also have an enhanced design for a more aesthetically pleasing look.

“We are thrilled to hear about the new sponsorship with CHRISTUS,” added volleyball Head Coach Samantha Dabbs said. “As a coaching staff, it will be great to work with our student-athletes on a state-of-the-art court. We are working hard to continue growing the program and having a new, student-athlete friendly playing surface goes a long way in accomplishing that goal. We are already looking forward to next season and can’t wait to compete on this amazing new floor.”
