UIW Announces $1.9 Million Grant

Mentors Offering Maternal Support: A Prenatal Program Building Maternal Self-Esteem, Coping,and Resilience and Decreasing Depression

San Antonio – The University of the Incarnate Word Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions is proud to announce the award of approximately $1.9 million, 3-year grant for a multi-site study focused on military women and pregnancy.

Dr. Karen Weis, professor and Brigadier General Lillian Dunlap Endowed Chair, will direct the study titled Mentors Offering Maternal Support (M-O-M-STM): A Prenatal Program Building Maternal Self-Esteem, Coping, and Resilience and Decreasing Depression.

The study will seek to enroll over 900 women in their first trimester of pregnancy and follow them through 6 months postpartum. The M-O-M-STM program recruitment and intervention will be conducted at Naval Medical Center San Diego, Madigan Army Medical Center and San Antonio Military Medical Center. Recruitment is anticipated to begin in November. The goal of the study is to determine the efficacy of the program to reduce pregnancy-specific anxiety and depression and improve pregnancy and birth outcomes in military women.

The Joint Program Committee-5, Military, Family, and Community Psychological Health and Resilience working group funded the grant.
