A message to the UIW community from President Dr. Lou Agnese

December 7, 2015

Dear Friends:

Please allow me to update you on recent activity concerning the Campus Carry legislation that was enacted during the most recent Texas Legislative session. The “Campus Carry” is a bill that provides that license holders may carry a concealed handgun on college and university campuses in Texas, starting Aug. 1, 2016.

The law allows private universities such as UIW to “opt out” of the requirement and continue to ban concealed handguns from campus, but must first consult with its faculty, staff and students. Accordingly, this past October and November, a survey was sent to students, faculty, and staff. The survey response overwhelmingly expressed that UIW should opt out and continue to ban concealed handguns from campus as permitted by the statute.

Based on the survey responses, the Executive Council recommended to the UIW Board of Trustees at the December 4, 2015, meeting to opt out. The Board of Trustees accepted the recommendation and, therefore, UIW will continue with its current policy that bans concealed handguns from campus.

Thank you for your time and consideration. On behalf of the Board, please accept our best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Lou
