Active-Duty Service Members
UIW Supports Our Servicemembers During the Shutdown
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is committed to supporting our active duty servicemembers during the government shutdown. We recognize the challenges this situation creates and will ensure that those affected can continue their education without interruption.
UIW will provide assistance to our active-duty servicemembers currently enrolled in coursework that was preapproved through Tuition Assistance (TA) but who are unable to receive TA funding due to the shutdown.
As an active duty servicemember, you will continue to receive the discounted tuition rate of $750 per course, regardless of the status of your TA funds. In addition, UIW will award a one-time UIW Grant of up to $750 for one Fall II course, after applying any eligible Federal Pell Grant funds.
Requirements to receive the UIW Grant:
- Active enrollment in a Fall II course at UIW.
- The course must have been preapproved for Tuition Assistance (TA).
- Submit the 2025–2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov by Oct. 24, 2025. (The Office of Financial Assistance is available to assist you with completing your FAFSA!)
- Verify your Pell Grant eligibility and complete any required documentation with the Office of Financial Assistance. You may choose not to accept the student loans offered through the FAFSA.
- While graduate students are not eligible for the Federal Pell grant, the FAFSA is still required to receive the UIW Grant. You may choose not to accept the student loans offered through the FAFSA.
- Receive your UIW Grant upon completion of all required steps and verification.
Grade Requirements
- Undergraduate students must earn at least a grade of C in the course covered by the grant.
- Graduate students must earn at least a grade of B in the course covered by the grant.
If grade requirements are not met, the grant will be canceled, and you will be responsible for the resulting balance.
In the unlikely event that retroactive TA becomes available, the UIW grant will be canceled.
Any additional Fall II courses you choose to remain enrolled in may still qualify for Federal Pell Grants and/or student loans, but will not be eligible for the UIW Grant.
If you decide not to remain enrolled in additional course(s) for Fall II, it is your responsibility to drop those courses by the deadlines below to avoid any financial obligation for tuition not covered by grants, loans, or other aid:
- School of Professional Studies: Oct. 24, 2025 (last day to drop with 100% refund)
- Main Campus: Oct. 27, 2025 (last day to drop with 100% refund)
UIW leadership stands firmly with our servicemembers during this time. We remain dedicated to ensuring that your education continues without interruption, despite the temporary challenges posed by the shutdown!
