Degree Plans

Mathematics majors can choose from one of two degree programs below. Minor information can also be found here.

The Mathematics degree program emphasizes concepts, procedures, and connections. All courses develop reasoning abilities along with skills in precise communication of concepts. Problem solving is addressed throughout the program. Students are provided with solid mathematical foundation that well prepare them for advanced graduate study or careers in education, businesses, industrial or other professional fields and practical skills and methods to deal with realistic problems in those fields.

Mathematics Electives (24 hours):

Mathematics (MATH) courses at the 2000 level or higher, including 12 credit hours at the 3000 level or higher. MATH 2340 is recommended as a general elective course but does not count toward the mathematics electives requirement.

Minor Requirement:

A minor in an approved discipline or an approved interdisciplinary minor.

Mathematics Electives (24 hours):

Mathematics (MATH) courses at the 2000 level or higher, including 12 credit hours at the 3000 level or higher. Math 2340 does not count toward the mathematics electives requirement.

The following connection courses are also required for the BS in mathematics:

One computer language course (Math 2340 is strongly recommended. It meets the computer language requirement but does not count toward mathematics elective credits.)
Calculus-based Physics 2305 or 2306 with a lab.

Minor Requirement:

A minor in an approved discipline or an approved interdisciplinary minor.

Mathematics Minor

Students who are pursuing majors in subject areas other than mathematics may elect to get a minor in mathematics.

Mathematics Minor Requirements:

  • 18 semester hours of mathematics courses to include MATH 2312, 2313
  • Minimum of 9 hours of upper division courses
