Who qualifies as an international student?
At the University of the Incarnate Word, international students are defined by their citizenship/residency status. If a student is not a U.S. citizen (either by birth or by naturalization) nor a permanent resident, the student is deemed an international student and must submit the application for international students as well as all required forms.

• Copy of passport and any visa you hold for the US
• 2 Letters of Recommendation
• Proof of Meningitis Vaccine
• Exchange Student Information Sheet (only for students attending UIW from a Sister School for one or two semesters)

In addition to the above listed documents, please send in your official academic records (in English) and any official test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, GMAT, GRE). Inquire with International Admissions for specific program requirements and deadlines. Transfer students interested in receiving credit from their previous institution must submit course descriptions in English with their application.

English Proficiency

Proof of English proficiency is required before registering and enrolling for classes. Degree-seeking students that do not submit an acceptable score prior to arrival will be given an in-house English exam at International Orientation. Students that do not test out of the required ELS level are required to take English as a Second Language prior to beginning university courses and at an additional expense.

First Time Freshman: A TOEFL score of 79, an IELTS score of 6.5 or completion of ELS level 109 English for Academic Purposes is required prior to registering for university courses. Conditional admission is available. Students graduating from a US high school are automatically exempt from the English requirement.

Transfer Students: A TOEFL score of 79, an IELTS score of 6.5 or completion of ELS level 109 English for Academic Purposes is required prior to registering for university courses. Students transferring from an accredited US college/university may be exempt from the English proficiency requirement if a minimum of 24 degree seeking credit hours are successfully completed with a grade of C or better.  Remedial courses and intensive English courses do NOT count towards the 24 credits.  Completion of English Composition I & II with a grade of C or better will also exempt international transfer students from the English proficiency requirement.

Graduate/Doctoral Students: A TOEFL score of 83, an IELTS score of 6.5 or completion of ELS level 110 English for Academic Purposes is required prior to registering for university courses. Students graduating from an accredited US university are exempt from the English requirement.

Exchange Students: Students attending UIW for one or two semesters from under the Sister School Partnerships must submit an acceptable TOEFL score of 79 or an IELTS score of 6.5 at the time of applying. Exchange students will not be accepted without the required scores.

What to do if you have transcripts in a language other than English?
An official translation is required for any transcript not issued in English. Students must submit the official transcript and the official translation. The translation may be done in the home country but must be stamped, signed and sealed by an official translating service. The International Admissions Office and the university's Registrar's Office may request an official credential evaluation at any time. Here are two common services:
