Department of Theatre Arts

Welcome to the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of the Incarnate Word. Theatre Arts, a department in the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, offers comprehensive training and education encouraging students to develop as performers, producers, designers, directors and the many roles needed to create the art of theatre.

There are many reasons to pursue the study of Theatre Arts at the university level and even more reasons to do so at UIW. Theatre students explore human perspective and its expression. Through rigorous courses, hands-on training and close collaboration with faculty, UIW students practice critical thinking, creative problem solving, collaboration and empathy.

The mission of the Department of Theatre Arts focuses on three main goals:

  • Providing majors with a strong, basic foundation in the performing arts that will enable them to pursue postgraduate educational and professional opportunities in Theatre
  • Enhancing the general education of the University's core curriculum;
  • Enriching the cultural, spiritual, and intellectual lives of the on-campus and San Antonio communities

UIW’s Department of Theatre Arts offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts and is the only university in San Antonio that is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, ensuring that students receive theatre training that will meet established national standards of excellence in terms of content, production quality and teaching practices. A 16:1 student/faculty ratio means classes are generally small and allow for closer interaction with faculty and peers as well as specialized instruction.

The department generally produces four plays a year. Students not only act in those productions, but they also take on leadership roles in creating each production's costumes, scenery, lighting and sound. Performed in UIW’s theatre spaces, the plays are professional-level productions that are open to the public. Each production is both an extension of the academic program and a site of artistic and intellectual expression.

Students also have opportunities to work with international, regional and local guest artists in workshops, coursework and production. Students who demonstrate talent and skills in design (costume, set or lights) can apply to serve as designer or assistant designer on selected fully mounted productions in the local theatre community, providing a unique opportunity for real-world experience while working towards their degree.

The department offers many opportunities for UIW students to grow professionally, personally and academically. The department enjoys access privileges to two local museums, providing research opportunities related to production and coursework. Students can visit the McNay Art Museum or the Witte Museum. They may also participate in the Extended Run Players, a performance group based out of the department.

San Antonio Theatre and Arts Opportunities

San Antonio loves all the arts! To find out more, visit the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs to see local arts listings.

San Antonio has many community-based theatres that have given students and alumni the opportunity to work as actors, designers, technicians and directors.

UIW Theatre Arts is a member of the San Antonio Theatre Coalition (SATCO). SATCO member theatres present a wide variety of productions in many different venues. As the SATCO website states, “from award-winning theatre for children, to traditional American, world classics, original works, to avant-garde, member theatres represent the full spectrum of theatrical possibilities.”

The SATCO website lists local auditions, and the site allows people to sign up for Playbill, a weekly email notice about local theatrical productions in and around San Antonio. For more information, visit the SATCO.

The Alamo Theatre Arts Council (ATAC) is an organization that honors excellence in San Antonio theatre.

Each fall, ATAC hosts a Globe Awards Gala, where local theatres are honored for excellence in twenty-six categories including performance, design and direction. UIW Theatre Arts proudly displays many of its ATAC Globe Awards in the Coates Theatre lobby. Visitors and guests are welcome to view UIW's ATAC Globe Awards. For more information, visit the Alamo Theatre Arts Council.
