‘Suffrage’ breaks hardcore music barriers

Suffrage, an all-women’s band based in Lafayette, La., is breaking the social constructs of a hardcore music scene mainly dominated by men.
The four-member band, which is setting out to be a beacon of progression and hope for the hardcore community, consists of Lily, who has grown immense appreciation for the art since her youth and spent a lot of time exploring her passions for music; Taylee, a bassist originally from her school’s local jazz band to one of the hometown’s icons; Kat, a guitarist so dedicated and consistent that it leaves you in awe; and Brittany, a drummer who accompanied her parents in their musician days and tagged along in band practices when she was little. Brit is no stranger to the scene and has been behind a drum kit for about 19 years now.
Since their debut show in February 2023, Suffrage has covered a wide range of hardcore projects with artists ranging from Alice in Chains to Misfits. Suffrage is working on original music -- a different sub-genre of hardcore -- and hopes to share it as soon as possible.
For now, if you wish to meet the crew and catch a show in person, an over-the-weekend stay in Lafayette is in your future. I caught the act at a city venue called “Feed N Seed” last November.
Just be ready to join the pit because a Suffrage show riles up the crowd.
