In the vibrant world of fashion, where creativity thrives, individuals often embark on journeys that defy expectations and challenge norms.
Daniel “Dan” Williams, a junior fashion major at the University of the Incarnate Word, embodies this spirit as he navigates the intricate landscape of creative direction, funding his ventures and pushing boundaries to manifest his vision.
Williams shared some of his design visions Tuesday, April 9, in his runway show, “La Vengeance de Joan” -- French for “the Vengeance of Joan” – in McCombs Center Rosenberg Skyroom. He also served as creative director for the show.
“I constructed the garments, planned everything, and went through the marketing,” Williams said. “Anything logistical, I also ran through with this.”
From the outset, Williams said his journey has been marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence.
“I remember my freshman year, someone told me I couldn’t be a creative director,” Williams said. “So, I decided to achieve that goal.”
After years of involvement with the UIW Fashion Club, Williams said he was approached to put together his first runway show, “Decoded & Deconstructed.” While his show received praise from some, he said there was much backlash related to his artistic choices and competence.
He admits the negativity took a toll on him, but ultimately only fueled the fire of his passion to do “Joan” entirely independent of the university. Based on the historical record of Joan of Arc’s martyrdom, he said this production served as both a source of symbolic catharsis and motivation to continue to push the uniform boundaries he sees surrounding and submerging the fashion world.
Williams placed much importance on hiring exceptional photographers and videographers as well as graphic designers -- underscoring his commitment to ensuring every aspect of the production reflected his uncompromising standards of quality – for this show that took six months of planning.
“If anyone ever doubts you, never listen to them,” Williams said. “Take the opportunity for yourself to be and do something great.”
As the project unfolded, he said his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication became apparent at every turn. He also highlighted diversity and inclusivity, and challenged industry norms.
“I want to celebrate everyone and show that beautiful clothing can be on every single body,” Williams
