Choosing dialogue over division

Amidst the widespread protests erupting on college campuses across the nation concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the University of the Incarnate Word stands out for its commitment to fostering dialogue over division.

As the president of both UIW’s Student Government Association and Hillel, I have witnessed firsthand the power of constructive conversation and am grateful for the environment that our university nurtures. (Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, also known as Hillel International, is the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, working with thousands of college students globally.)

In times of international crises, emotions on college campuses can mirror the tumult of the global stage. While passion is invaluable, without direction, it can lead to extremism that only serves to deepen divides. At UIW, we strive to channel this passion into productive dialogue, where diverse perspectives are shared and respected. This approach not only educates but enlightens, paving the way for informed understanding rather than uninformed reaction.

Unlike many institutions where protests have occasionally spiraled into confrontations that lead to antisemitism and Islamophobia, our campus has been a model of peaceful engagement. Here, dialogue is not just encouraged but is the foundation of how we address contentious issues. This is something I am profoundly grateful for, not just as a student but as a Jew. It’s an approach that transforms potential conflict into opportunities for learning and growth.

Respectful dialogue involves listening earnestly, questioning thoughtfully, and critiquing constructively. It requires patience and the willingness to engage with challenging ideas. In our university community, we prioritize these interactions, knowing this is the path to genuine understanding and reconciliation.

The University of the Incarnate Word is not just my academic home but a beacon of hope in a time that is fraught with division. As we continue to navigate these challenging times, let us hold fast to the principle that dialogue is the most powerful tool we have for making peace -- both within our walls and beyond them.
