Broadway Campus hosts Fiesta fun

When San Antonio holds its biggest annual party of the year – Fiesta – Alamo Heights and the University of the Incarnate Word are not about to be left out.

The Alamo Heights Rotary Club held its 36th annual “Alamo Heights Night” 5:30-11:30 p.m. Friday, April 19, on UIW’s Broadway Campus where the event moved 14 years ago from the

Alamo Heights swimming pool parking lot area.

“The original purpose of the event was to put on a fun event during Fiesta time for the community and Alamo Heights surrounding area,” Operations Manager Rick Berchin said.

Although the rides were missing this year, the event did have games and activities for all ages stretching from Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium to the softball fields and around Ann Barshop Natatorium. Live bands performed on two stages as thousands found a variety of food-and-drink vendors.

“It is great getting with friends and family for this event, especially if you graduated and (are) part of the UIW alumni,” Roy Salinas said.

Admission was $20 for adults, but active-duty and reserve military got in free with a valid military ID. Otherwise, admission was $5 for children 12-17, $5 for students with non-UIW IDs, and free for children under 12. UIW students, staff and faculty got in free with UIW IDs.

The event raises money for charities and student scholarships, Berchin said, adding that UIW donates its space in exchange for scholarships.
