Music Major Core (MUSI)

Freshman music majors explore core repertory, health and safety issues, and career options for musicians. Students listen to representative musical works in recorded and occasionally live performance and develop basic literacy in a variety of musical styles. Students learn about the maintenance of health and safety within the context of practice, performance, teaching and listening. Various career options in Music are introduced by faculty, guest speakers or visiting artists. This course must be taken twice (fall and spring).

Students explore melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation, ear training, and sight singing.  Must be taken with MUSI 1321. 

Prerequisite: Score of at least 70% on the aural skills entrance diagnostic test

This is a continuation of MUSI 1191. Must be taken with MUSI 1322.

This is the first of a four-course sequence designed to introduce students to the principles and practice of harmony in Western music from the seventeenth century to the present day. Must be taken with MUSI 1191 and MUSI 1111.

This is the second of a four-course sequence designed to introduce students to the principles and practice of harmony in Western music from the seventeenth century to the present day. Must be taken with MUSI 1192 and MUSI 1121.

Prerequisite:  MUSI 1321

This is the third of a four-course sequence introducing students to the principles and practice of harmony in Western music from the seventeenth century to the present day.  Must be taken with MUSI 2193 and MUSI 2110.

This is the fourth of a four-course sequence introducing students to the principles and practice of harmony in Western music from the seventeenth century to the present day.

This is the first course of a four-semester sequence that provides all Music majors with functional keyboard skills and enhances the learning of music theory through the application of theoretical concepts at the keyboard. Must be taken concurrently with MUSI 1321.

This is the second course of a three-semester sequence that provides Music majors with functional keyboard skills and enhances the learning of music theory through the application of theoretical concepts at the keyboard. Must be taken concurrently with MUSI 1322. 

Prerequisite: MUSI 1111

This is the third of a four-semester sequence that provides Music majors with functional keyboard skills and enhances the learning of music theory through the application of theoretical concepts at the keyboard. Must be taken concurrently with MUSI 2323.

Prerequisite: MUSI 1211

This is the fourth of a four-semester sequence that provides Music majors with functional keyboard skills and enhances the learning of music theory through the application of theoretical concepts at the keyboard. All Music majors take the Keyboard Proficiency Exam at the end of this course. Must be taken with MUSI 3324.

Prerequisite: MUSI 2110

Students explore instrumentation and aspects of orchestration so that students learn how to score and arrange music for various types of small and large ensembles.

Music major and minors explore the different musical styles, composers, genres and aesthetic views of the Western world from the time of the ancient Greeks to the time of Mozart and Haydn.

Prerequisite: MUSI 1322

Music majors and minors explore the different musical styles, composers, genres and aesthetic views of the Western world from the time of Beethoven to the present.

Prerequisite:  MUSI 3341 or permission of instructor

Students explore the music of a variety of world cultures and address issues related to contemporary music production, mass-media proliferation and cultural appropriation. Required for all Music majors. Available to Music minors as an upper-division elective with permission of the instructor. May be taken as a CLST elective, with permission of instructor.

Prerequisite: MUSI 3342

Students explore music as an integral component of selected types of Asian theater. Representative works are explored from a variety of analytical perspectives, including ones informed by history, theater studies, art history, cultural theory, and ethnomusicology. May count toward the world music requirement (MUSI 3348) for all Music degrees other than the B.M. degree with a major in Music Therapy. Will satisfy the upper-level Music elective requirement for the Music minor. (As needed)

This advanced course in stylistic analysis is designed for advanced Music majors as a practical application of their previous studies in music history, theory, and performance. This course entails comprehensive analysis of all aspects of musical style, including form, harmonic language, texture, and instrumentation. Required for all Music majors except students seeking a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy, or a Bachelor of Arts with and emphasis in Music Industry Studies. Available to Music minors as an upper-division elective with permission of the instructor.

This course is designed to introduce the student to the main research tools and resources employed in the various music fields and to the specific skills involved in reading, writing and communication ideas in such fields.

Prerequisite:  MUSI 3324, MUSI 3341, MUSI 3342, MUSI 3342

Students explore the theory and practice of techniques of choral and instrumental conducting. The course includes practical conducting activities.

Private Lessons (MUAP)

Students develop sound vocal technique and performance repertoire, including pieces from Italian anthologies, English, American, Spanish and other appropriate literature. Courses beyond the first year provide further development of sound vocal technique in the classical style with more advanced repertoire in the German, English, Spanish and Italian languages. More advanced interpretive skills are developed. Each level is the prerequisite for the following level. May be repeated for credit. Fee.  

Instructor's Permission  

Students receive individual applied instruction with a focus on the development of technical and expressive maturity, and on the coverage of original/true repertoire for the instrument. Each level is the prerequisite for the following level. May be repeated for credit. Fee.  

Instructor's Permission

Individual applied instruction in traditional and contemporary compositional techniques for different mediums and performing forces. Each level is the prerequisite for the following level. May be repeated for credit. Fee. 

Instructor's Permission

This course is the capstone requirement that involves the public performance of repertoire on the principal instrument.

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MUAP, voice or instrumental

This Capstone requirement involves the public performance of a student's originally composed works.  

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MUAP Composition

This course is reserved for advanced voice students, or those preparing for a voice recital. Aspects covered include interpretation of the music and poetry, diction, ensemble between vocalist and pianist, performance practice, and any aspect of the study and performance of vocal repertoire. May be repeated for credit.

Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in an MUAP voice class, and instructor’s permission

Ensembles (MUEN)

The UIW Cardinal Chorale is the primary vocal ensemble of the UIW Music Department and one of the largest student organizations on campus. Membership includes students from many different academic disciplines and occasionally UIW faculty and staff. Music reading ability is not required. May be repeated for credit. Counts towards the core Fine Arts credit.

Prerequisite: Audition and permission of instructor

The Cardinal Singers is UIW’s select chamber choir, numbering 12-24 members. The Singers perform music of an intricate or intimate nature, from Medieval to contemporary a capella, usually demanding a high level of musical competence. The Singers perform solo concerts, as well as with the Chorale, and are often invited to sing at special occasions throughout the city, and for the university. May be repeated for credit. Counts towards the core Fine Arts credit.

Prerequisite: Audition and permission of instructor

The Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band on campus. Membership in the Wind Ensemble is open to all students on campus who have a woodwind, brass, or percussion background. The ensemble is open to all majors and prior playing experience is strongly suggested. May be repeated for credit. Counts towards the core Fine Arts credit.

Prerequisite: Audition and permission of instructor

The Marching Cardinals is comprised of students studying a wide variety of academic majors, and performs at every home football game, select away games and performances off-campus and in exhibition at marching contests around San Antonio and Austin. The band typically plays three halftime shows and a traditional pre-game drill every year as entertainment for the UIW Football Game Day experience. May be repeated for credit. Counts towards the core Fine Arts credit.

The Orchestra of the Incarnate Word brings together UIW music students and faculty with professional and amateur musicians from the San Antonio community. The orchestra performs a variety of works from the standard repertoire. Concerts are given on UIW's main campus and at other venues throughout San Antonio and Bexar County. May be repeated for credit. Counts towards the core Fine Arts credit.

Prerequisite: Audition and permission of instructor

The UIW Cardinal Jazz Band performs professional level jazz repertoire that includes swing, funk, and Latin. Ensemble membership is open to UIW students, faculty, and members of the community. May be repeated for credit. Counts towards the core Fine Arts credit.

Music Education (MUSI)

This course addresses techniques necessary for effective classroom instruction in beginning instrumental music classes. Students will receive instruction on the basic skills of woodwind performance and development of fundamental skills on each woodwind instrument. Classroom management and pedagogical strategies will be discussed to create the proper environment for beginning band students. Instruments will include flute, clarinet and saxophone. Fee. 

Prerequisite: MUSI 1321

This course addresses techniques necessary for effective classroom instruction in beginning instrumental music classes. Students will receive instruction on the basic brass performance and development of fundamental skills on each skills of brass instrument. Classroom management and pedagogical strategies will be discussed to create the proper environment for beginning band students. Instruments will include trumpet, trombone and French horn. Fee. 

Prerequisite: MUSI 1321

Students examine techniques necessary for effective classroom instruction in beginning instrumental music classes. Students receive instruction on the basic skills of string performance and development of fundamental skills on each string instrument. Classroom management and pedagogical strategies are discussed to create the proper environment for beginning band students. Instruments will include violin, viola, cello and bass. Fee (as needed).

Prerequisite: MUSI 1321

Students examine techniques necessary for effective classroom instruction in beginning instrumental music classes. Students receive instruction on the basic skills of percussions performance and development of fundamental skills on each percussion instrument. Classroom management and pedagogical strategies are discussed to create the proper environment for beginning band students. Instruments will include snare drum, bass drum, timpani, keyboards and accessory instruments. Fee (as needed).

Prerequisite: MUSI 1321

This course will explore vocal problems, techniques, methods, materials and voice science. Required for voice performance and teacher certification majors. 

Prerequisite: MUSI 3324

This course will study Latin, Italian, German, French and English vocal diction for singers by learning and utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet. Required for Music Education and Vocal Performance majors.

Students examine developmentally age-appropriate skills and music for use in the elementary classroom. Required for all-level Music certification.

Prerequisite: MUSI 1322

Students address developmentally age-appropriate skills and music for use in the middle school, junior high and high school classroom. Required for all-level Music certification.

Instrumental Techniques and Pedagogy is designed to prepare prospective teachers for the middle and high school instrumental music classroom. It will serve to define the expectations and responsibilities of the secondary music director and develop effective instructional skills needed to create a successful secondary instrumental music program.

Prerequisite: MUSI 4344

Choral Methods is designed to prepare prospective teachers for the middle school, high school and college choral music classrooms. It will serve to define both the musical and non-musical expectations, responsibilities and instructional skills needed to create a successful secondary choral music program.

Music Industries (MUST)

Students examine most of the important music software and hardware that today's musicians and music educators are using to create, record, edit, teach and publish music.

Students explore arranging of commercial music for acoustic instruments and voices, and for electronic instruments, including synthesizers, drum machines and sequencers, for production in a recording studio.

Prerequisite: MUSI 1322

Students survey the component areas of contemporary music industries, including recording technologies, music publishing, music marketing and artist management. This class addresses possible focuses within the music industry. In addition to class work, there are three on-site music business practicum experiences. No prerequisites.

Students explore all aspects of record production in the twenty-first century, focusing on the tools and techniques used in today's modern recording studios.

Prerequisites: MUST 2325, MUST 2340

This course will cover important areas of law that apply to the music and entertainment business. This course may not be repeated for credit.

This course will present all the basic concepts and techniques necessary for designing and implementing music related websites.

Prerequisite: MUST 2340

This capstone course in the Music Industry Studies program is designed to prepare the student in a focused area related to the music industry. Work experience is coordinated through merchants, recording studios, music publishers, professional entertainment management, etc.

Prerequisite: MUSI 2323

Music Therapy (MUTH)

This course is designed to build strong, basic vocal techniques in the Music Therapy student. These techniques are taught within the context of literature and "voice as a musical instrument" used in the music therapy clinical settings.

Prerequisite: MUTH 1301

Students get an overview of the theory, history and research base of Music Therapy. Applications of Music Therapy in various settings and with various populations are reviewed and demonstrated. No prerequisite.

The first of two class guitar courses for music therapy majors. This course will cover the basic knowledge of playing the guitar.

This is the second of two class guitar courses for music therapy majors.

Prerequisite: MUTH 2101 or permission of instructor

This course covers percussion techniques for use in music therapy.

Prerequisite: MUTH 1301

Students gain an overview of the clinical treatment process ethics, and group process as preparation for future practicum and intern experiences. Students are required to observe and report on five music therapy sessions with practicing music therapists in the San Antonio, Austin and South Texas areas.

Prerequisite: MUTH 1301

The study and clinical practice of Music Therapy for specific populations. Focus on working with children from birth to adolescence. Students participate in and lead music therapy interventions in clinical sessions under the supervision of a registered or certified music therapist in the San Antonio or Austin area.

Prerequisite: MUTH 2271 and permission of instructor

This course is designed to provide practicum supervision to the students who are also taking the Music in Therapy I class concurrently. The focus is on describing, demonstrating and discussing their clinical practicum experiences. This course will review the student’s weekly experience and receive feedback from the instructor. The on-going feedback will include problem solving and exploring possible alternative techniques during the student’s clinical experience. This course may not be repeated credit.

Corequisite: MUTH 2251

This is a continuation of MUTH 2251 with a focus on working with adolescents and adults in emotional distress.

Prerequisite: MUTH 2251

This course is designed to provide practicum supervision to the music therapy who are also taking the Music in Therapy II class during that semester. The focus is on describing, demonstrating and discussing their clinical practicum experiences. This course will review the student’s weekly experience and receive feedback from the instructor. The on-going feedback will include problem solving and exploring possible alternative techniques during the student’s clinical experience. This course may not be taken for credit more than once.

Corequisite: MUTH 2252

This is a continuation of MUTH 2252 with a focus on working within geriatric and medical settings.

Prerequisite: MUTH 2252

This course is designed to provide practicum supervision to the music therapy majors who are also taking the Music in Therapy III class during that semester. The focus is on describing, demonstrating and discussing their clinical practicum experiences. This course will review the student’s weekly experience and receive feedback from the instructor. The on-going feedback will include problem solving and exploring possible alternative techniques during the student’s clinical experience. This course may not be repeated for credit.

Corequisite: MUTH 3253

Skill development and creative exploration of piano improvisation techniques. Students apply the knowledge and skill of various styles of keyboard accompaniment to clinical fieldwork experiences and classroom experiences.

This course is an in-depth study of the principles underlying the practice of Music Therapy and musical behavior. Students explore psychoacoustics, auditory perception, emotions and meaning in music, music in cultures, and music and its relationship to development and behavior.

Prerequisite: PSYC 1301

Students explore and experience improvisational techniques for therapeutic purposes. Improvisational media include music and sound patterns, music and movement, and techniques of communicating with others through music.

Prerequisite: MUTH 1301 and MUTH 2271

Students receive updates on current research and research techniques. Students complete a senior Music Therapy project and a presentation of the project is required. Must be taken concurrently with MUTH 4301.

Corequisite: MUTH 4301

Music Therapy students partially complete a 1056-hour (minimum) clinical internship at an approved site in the South Texas area. This course is taken twice to fulfill the six-hour internship requirement.

Prerequisite: Completion of all coursework for Music Therapy degree, successful completion of the piano improvisation test and permission of instructor. (As needed)
