Alumni Spotlight: Ashley Behabetz '22
By Krystal Cantu-Cuate

Sometimes, events unfold in our lives that don’t immediately make sense until we look back and realize we were placed exactly where we needed to be at precisely the right moment. For Ashley Behabetz, being furloughed from the Colorado Rockies in 2020 due to COVID-19 was unexpected. Yet, it was that very moment that pushed her to pursue her next opportunity in sports, eventually leading her to UIW.

Through her sister, who played softball at UIW, Behabetz already had a strong connection to the University. That relationship helped her connect with the UIW Athletic Department during its search for a broadcast graduate assistant. Taking a leap of faith, Behabetz accepted the role and moved to San Antonio to begin a master’s program while continuing to build her broadcast experience.

Throughout her time at UIW, Behabetz continued to strengthen her broadcast and communication skills while pursuing her dream of landing a full-time on-air talent role. Though her journey at UIW was far from easy, the unwavering support she received from the Communication Arts Department and Trey Guinn, PhD, ultimately carried her to graduation day. Feeling seen, heard and cared for remains one of Behabetz’s most cherished memories of UIW.

Going into her second year at UIW, an opportunity to work in game presentation with the San Antonio Spurs became available, and Behabetz quickly seized it. Being part of such a respected organization was a dream, and had she remained in Colorado, it may never have been a path she considered. Today, Behabetz serves as Associate Manager of Game Presentation for the San Antonio Spurs and also works as on-air talent for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. Outside of the Frost Bank Center, Behabetz enjoys playing co-ed softball, spending time with her husband and dogs, and reading, mostly in the offseason, of course.

When asked to share a piece of advice for current, past and future Cardinals, Behabetz offered this: “Always advocate for yourself; if you don’t, no one else will. Be confident in your capabilities and lean on the people in your corner!”
