Communication Arts

Communication ArtsThe Communication Arts progrm uses a unique blend of theory-driven and experienced-based classes where students acquire the knowledge and skills to enter the media industry. Fields of study include production, print media, or convergent media delivery and prepares students for further study at the graduate level.

In keeping with both the liberal arts approach and the Mission of Incarnate Word, the department seeks:

  • To cultivate the student's imagination and creativity in the implementation of theory content and technical application of effective communications;

  • To foster exploration of diverse and alternative perspectives including critical interpretation of ideas, images, and symbols; and

  • To encourage students to examine the role of media in our society so they may be prepared to participate confidently, ethically, and competently as concerned, enlightened citizens.

Small class size facilitates interaction between students and professors to maximize learning. Class content centers on the various branches of communication theories, including media studies, media ethics, aesthetics of visual design, and production skills including radio, television, film, computer, web design, online publishing, and the Internet. The Communication Arts field requires research and writing skills for media as well as for scholarly research. Students learn by doing: producing and writing newspaper or magazine articles for the Logos (uiwlogos.org), the campus newspaper; scripting and producing video documentaries; announcing and performing on kuiw.org our Internet radio station; produce video programming for uiwtv.org, our television station; and researching and creating well-written essays and original communication research. Students may choose one of six concentrations: Production, Journalism, Media Studies, Speech, Bilingual Communications and Convergent Media.
