What is our Mission?

In cooperation with university faculty, the mission of the University Advising Center is to assist our students to discover their abilities, values, interests and limitations in the context of higher education. We do this by collaborating with them to develop effective decision making skills and realistic academic goals consistent with their career choices and the realities that they will encounter in the world of work.

How do we accomplish our Mission?

  • As educators, we assist our students in the development of their academic plans and prepare them for admission into their chosen major. At the same time, in consultation with their faculty advisors, we continuously provide guidance so that students can evaluate their progress towards their chosen educational objectives.

  • In cooperation with the faculty, we monitor students’ academic progress through the Student Intervention Program. We constantly provide guidance and suggestions on how to improve their academic skills.

  • We foster students’ ability to take charge of their own academic life by promoting a growing sense of responsibility and facilitating the acquisition of greater skill in decision-making and problem solving, specifically as these competencies relate to their choice of major.

  • We work with all undeclared students until such time they decide on a major. After they have selected a major, the advising responsibility is transferred to an appropriate faculty advisor in their chosen field.

  • We also serve as advocates and/or mediators when our students experience personal, cultural, social or academic conflict.

  • As academic counselors we serve as facilitators who help students identify and assess alternatives and the consequences of their decisions. However, we believe that the ultimate responsibility for making decisions concerning goals and educational plans rests with the individual student.

“As educators our most important objective is to help create success stories.”
