Recognizing our Graduates

Ryan Shoptaugh

Shoptaugh is a native of San Antonio, the son of a retired Air Force serviceman who graduated from William J. Brennan High School on the city’s far west side. A lifelong passion for weather led him to pursue a Bachelor's Degree in Operational Meteorology from the School of Math, Science, and Engineering at the University of the Incarnate Word, where he graduated in 2017.

I grew up with KENS 5 always on in the living room during dinner, paying close attention to how the weather would affect my activities. Joining KENS 5 is an opportunity to learn under some of the best meteorologists out there, expand my weather knowledge and bring viewers the most accurate, up-to-date and timely forecasts.”

Ryan first made the transition from operational to broadcasting meteorology at KGBT in the Rio Grande Valley. He later joined KENS 5’s sister station KIII in Corpus Christi in 2018. The latter two stations are owned by TEGNA, one of the largest broadcasting companies in the country.

He transitioned to Kens5 in San Antonio November 2021.

Shoptaugh is a diehard fan of the San Antonio Spurs and enjoys traveling, hiking around the country and trying new foods around town.

The faculty and staff of the Department of Atmospheric Science and Physics at UIW are proud of Shoptaugh's post-graduate achievements!

In addition, his veteran meteorologist colleagues have commended his expertise and commented on the assets he brings to their team.

"Ryan is a terrific weather forecaster with strong Texas ties. We’re happy he’s coming back home to San Antonio to join our weather team."
- Jack Acosta, news director for KENS 5.

“South Texas weather is unique, and we’re thrilled to add another meteorologist with first-hand experience forecasting our weather patterns.”
- Bill Taylor, KENS 5 weather chief
