The Word Lived in the Past: A Promise for the Future

Opening Reception: Fri. Sept. 7, 2018, 6-8 p.m.

Internal Reception: Wed., Sept. 5, 2018, 1 – 2 p.m. (open to the public)

Exhibit on display: Wed., Sept. 5 – Fri., Oct. 5, 2018

The University of the Incarnate Word in conjunction with FOTOSEPTIEMBRE takes a glance at its past in a Foto (Photo) History. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word arrived in San Antonio in 1869 responding to a call to help those suffering from a yellow fever epidemic. Three young Sisters set up a clinic that would become Santa Rosa Hospital. Next they took up the challenge of an orphanage and then a school which in time evolved into The College and Academy of the Incarnate Word. This mission of the Sisters –and their successors– continues at UIW today, with a promise for the future.

“Disasterworks” - an exhibit by E. C. Kanko

Opening Reception: Fri., Oct. 12, 2018, 6-8 p.m.

Exhibit on display: Fri., Oct. 12 – Fri. Nov. 16, 2018

E. C. Kanko is a local artist and UIW alumni. After obtaining her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2010, her artwork branched out into many styles and mediums, including digital painting. Inspired by nature, current events, and social trends, she began an eight-year project that would become “Disasterworks.”
In this series of artworks, E. C. Kanko creates parodies of well known masterpieces to make effective before-and-after imagery without using an actual side-by-side comparison. These illustrations address various environmental and social issues, from littering to violence.

Michael Carnes: "Through the Looking Glass"
Senior Capstone Exhibit

Opening Reception: Fri., Oct. 12, 2018, 6-8 p.m.

Exhibit on display: Fri., Oct. 12 – Fri. Nov. 16, 2018

Michael Carnes was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1994.  He is currently attending the University of the Incarnate Word and is a candidate for the BFA degree in Art, which he will receive in December 2018.  Michael is a painter/mixed media artist working in oil and acrylics.  His work, which is figurative, concerns itself with the politics of sexual identity.

His approach brings together realistic depiction with an abstracted style.  Subjects run the gamut from self-portraiture to friends and family and well-known political figures.  This exploration asks viewers to look beyond shock value to accept and embrace the full gamut sexual identities.

 Artist’s Statement

I started painting from my pre-teens; drawing was a skill I’d already developed by then.  When I was twelve I took classes at the Upper Valley Art League in McAllen, Texas; as a result, I had the opportunity to exhibit with the group.  This gave me valuable lessons in selecting, installing, and presenting my work.  The experience also brought an appreciation of art’s power to communicate, something I haven’t forgotten.

Today, with sides being taken in sexual identity, I feel it’s important that the artists of my generation take a stand on this issue. Through confrontations and role-playing – real, imagined, and in fantasy – I examine the relationships between male and female, male and male, etc., cataloging the tensions, misapprehensions, and discomfort inherent in these meetings.

Paul Valadez:  “Selections from the Great Mexican-American Songbook”

Opening Reception: Fri., Mar. 1, 2019, 6-8 p.m.

Exhibit on display: Fri., Mar. 1 – Fri. Apr. 5, 2019

In an effort to explain this body of work I will put down the thoughts that passed through my mind as I created the work, “Selections from the Great Mexican-American Songbook”. The work has to do with my childhood and language. I grew up in a bicultural family, Anglo/white on my mother’s side and Mexican on my father’s side and I felt that I never fit in.  I was either Mexican or white depending on what side of my family I was spending time with. Language to me is the fact that, Spanish is the language of secrets; Spanish was spoken in front of me to keep me from knowing something. Spanish was never spoken in my home and when I was a child English was rarely spoken with my father’s family... (read more)
