Dr. Rafael Hoyle joined the University of the Incarnate Word in July of 2019 as the Special Assistant to the President for Planning and Campus Management. Prior to joining UIW, he was the managing director of International Studies Abroad (ISA)—one of the largest and most respected providers of study abroad programs for U.S. college students. Over the course of two decades with ISA, Dr. Hoyle played an instrumental role in forging institutional partnerships with over 400 universities, led the development of ISA’s Office of Health and Safety, created the Department of Academic Affairs, and established many of the management protocols, policies and systems that facilitated the growth of the company and that continue today to sustain the organization.
Dr. Hoyle’s experience in higher education also includes six years of experience as an instructor of Spanish at the University of Arizona and the University of Texas at Austin. He more recently taught Multicultural Education at the University of Virginia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance from the University of Arizona, a master’s degree in Spanish also from Arizona, and a Ph.D. in Spanish from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a native speaker of Spanish and feels a strong connection to the city of San Antonio, due in no small part to his Mexican heritage and his love of Mexican-American culture. He and his wife Risa are the proud parents of three wonderful boys.
