UIW Alum Receives Teaching Honor


It was smiles and tears that came much more easily than words to Yesenia Covarrubias. The first-year teacher at Walzem Elementary in the Northeast Independent School District was greeted with a surprise celebration on the morning of Wednesday, September 22, 2021 after being named the 2020-21 Texas Clinical Teacher of the Year. Covarrubias, who graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in May of 2021, was celebrated in her classroom for the achievement.

UIW Receives Grant Funding for More COVID-19 Vaccinations


UIW) is pleased to announce that it has received $16,326 in funding to help UIW provide COVID vaccinations to residents in primarily rural parts of Bexar County. UIW received the funds through a grant from the Houston-based Episcopal Health Foundation awarded to members of The Health Collaborative here in San Antonio, of which the University is a part.

UIW Makes “Great Colleges to Work For” List


UIW is one of the best universities in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by the “Great Colleges to Work For” program. The results, released in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education, are based on a survey of 196 colleges and universities.

UIW Lands on National “Best Colleges” List


UIW is proud to announce that it has been ranked in several categories in the 2022 Best Colleges list published by U.S. News and World Report. UIW ranked No. 263 on the Best Colleges National list, up nine spots from last year. UIW is the highest ranked local university on the national list. This is just the third year that UIW has been ranked on the national list as opposed to the regional list with many other local universities.

UIW Makes Major Classroom Tech Upgrades


As students return to UIW for the Fall 2021 semester, hundreds will notice a major change to their learning environment. Over the course of nine weeks during the summer, UIW has transformed 43 classrooms, auditoriums and other learning spaces with new technology to further enhance the learning experience.


UIW Students Help Step Up Vaccine Effort


UIW is proud to announce that Dr. Heather Barton-Weston, assistant professor and public health coordinator in the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions; Dr. Nile Barnes, assistant professor of Pharmacy; and Dr. Maria Felix-Ortiz, professor and chair of Psychology, obtained $32,000 of stipends from Interfaith Youth Core’s (IFYC) Faith in the Vaccine grant for UIW students to serve as “vaxambassadors” who promote vaccination against COVID-19.

UIW Receives National Recognition for Work with Veterans


The national website Military Times has ranked UIW among the tops in the nation in its service to the military. UIW ranked No. 4 in the Southwest, No. 6 in private not-for-profit institutions, and No. 43 in the overall rankings nationwide in the website’s annual “Best for Vets” listing.


UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine set to Launch First Mobile Medical Clinic


With the support of the Moody Foundation, the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) has launched a mobile medical clinic called the Mobile Osteopathic Medicine unit (MOM). The 29-foot vehicle will allow medical students and faculty to deliver services to the community including osteopathic primary care, immunizations, health screenings and more.

UIW has landed on the list of Top Private Employers in San Antonio published by the San Antonio Business Journal. UIW ranked number 12 with 1,304 local employees and 1,568 employees company wide.

UIW Appoints New Key Leadership Positions


UIW is proud to announce that it has selected John Bury and Rick Kimbrough to fill key leadership positions. Bury has been selected as the new vice president for Strategy and Enrollment. Kimbrough joins UIW as the new vice president for External Affairs.

UIW Helps Bring COVID Vaccine to Underserved Area


At least three dozen UIW students from the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing, Feik School of Pharmacy and School of Osteopathic Medicine along with over 100 volunteers will participate in a COVID-19 mass vaccination clinic at Southside High School on April 10, 2021. About 1,000 area residents have been pre-registered to receive the vaccine.

UIW Feik School of Pharmacy Students Tied for Number One in the State of Texas on National Exam

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that graduating students at the Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP) tied for the number one passing rate in the State of Texas in the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). The 96.2% pass rate this year is the second highest in the history of the school and ranked the school number 12 in the nation for 2020. This is out of 140 schools ranked by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy.
