UIW Unsung Hero

UIW unsung hero maryssa
Meet Maryssa Bustamante, transfer adviser at the University of the Incarnate Word. Maryssa was born and raised deep in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley, in Mercedes, TX. She has served UIW as a full-time staff member for two years, but was a Cardinal long before that! She began her undergraduate studies at UIW in 2012.

During her time here, Maryssa has built relationships with prospective UIW families and eased their transition into becoming part of the UIW community. Dr. Julie Nadeau, who nominated Maryssa for this week's Unsung Hero feature, says Maryssa "works tirelessly to serve prospective and incoming transfer students."When asked what she loves most about being part of the UIW family, Maryssa said, "I love the sense of community that can be found among the students, faculty and administration. I love that I come to work every morning and know that I am surrounded by truly amazing people who care deeply about the successes of one another."

When she's not positively impacting lives at UIW from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Maryssa most loves spending time with her daughter and fiancee or tackling DIY projects (she's pretty crafty). She also enjoys sewing - she has sewn everything from clothes, to pillows, to curtains, and hopes to teach her daughter to sew one day just like her grandmother taught her.

Be sure to give Maryssa a big, cheery hello the next time you see her and thank her for the tireless work she does to make UIW a better place! We appreciate you, Maryssa!

Dancing and Speaking for Water
Water is a critical issue for global security. Last year, the Incarnate Word Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Committee in partnership with URBAN-15 participated in the Global Water Dance Movement growing on five continents to celebrate beauty, raise awareness and call for advocacy. Learn of that on “El Ojo del Agua”, a discussion focused on the blue hole, San Antonio's sacred headwaters—particularly the stories, poems, songs, and other artistic expressions inspired by the springs for millennia among the diverse peoples. Facilitated by Sister Martha Ann Kirk of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and Isaac Cardenas, Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan elder, this discussion features archival footage of the springs at peak flow.

Join the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability and the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word for Dancing and Speaking for Water, a gathering celebrating and emphasizing the importance of water in the world. This event will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 8 p.m. at the Blue Hole at Headwaters at Incarnate Word. For more information, please contact Sr. Martha Ann Kirk at (210) 883-5934 or kirk@uiwtx.edu.

El Ojo del Agua: Sacred Springs, Sacred Stories
As part of San Antonio's Tricentennial arts activities, URBAN-15 is producing “Hidden Histories,” the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m., a series that pursues and preserves the stories, lives, and places that make San Antonio an inspiring cultural treasure. This series is supported by San Antonio Film Commission and the San Antonio Area Foundation.

“El Ojo del Agua: Sacred Springs, Sacred Stories,” stories, music, and dance inspired by San Antonio's sacred headwaters where diverse peoples have come for over 10,000 years was the June feature of “Hidden Histories,” and can be watched here. The program considers the Blue Hole from which springs have emerged which is within the Headwaters at Incarnate Word, a 53-acre nature sanctuary, a non-profit ministry of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word adjacent to the University of the Incarnate Word.

Isaac Cardenas, Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan elder and a graduate of Incarnate Word, shared on the waters and ancient wisdom from original peoples. Sister Martha Ann Kirk, a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, shared the words of Franciscan Friar Damian Massanet, about the beauty of nature and the river which the people called Yanaguana.
