The Rosary with St. James

The UIW Department of Theatre Arts invites you to The House of Bernarda Alba. A gem of a play from one of the best Spanish playwrights, Federico Garcia Lorca shows us what the consequences of fear, jealousy, hegemony, and desire can be. Angels Among Us
Angels Among Us is an art exhibition by Martin Emmanuel Rangel and Victor Hugo De La Fuente, two emerging artists. The opening reception is from 6 - 9 p.m., Friday, March 4 in the Kelso Art Gallery. Girls Global Summit
The Women's Global Connection (WGC) is excited to announce the 4th annual Girls Global Summit from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., Saturday, March 5 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room as the Women's History Month event. The event features presentations and discussions led by teams of female high school students about issues facing girls around the globe today. More than 200 girls from over 20 area middle and high schools are expected to participate. We encourage faculty, staff, students and family members to attend to listen and engage with the presenters (event attendance is appropriate for anyone middle school age or older). 14th Annual Pierre Lecture
As part of the university's on-going effort to engage with the realities of climate change raised in Pope Francis's recent encyclical, Laudato Si', the Religious Studies Department will host a lecture by theologian Colleen Mary Carpenter, Ph.D., of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN from 7 - 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 8 in the CHRISTUS Heritage Hall. Dr. Carpenter will take up the pope's call for our ecological conversion by presenting the possibilities of a forest spirituality, grounded in the human relationship with the landscape of the forest. The 2016 Sr. Margaret Patrice Slattery Lecture in English is at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 10 in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Dr. Tanja Stampfl will deliver the lecture entitled "Encountering the Other, Re-Seeing the Self: The Trope of the Encounter in Cross-Cultural Literature." Swing-In Auction Party and Golf Tournament
The Swing-In Auction Party is at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 28 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room and the Golf Tournament tee times are 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., Friday, April 29 at the Republic Golf Course. Swing-In is an annual event hosted by the UIW Development Board that raises funds for much needed scholarships. The theme for this year's auction party is Wild West; make sure to wear your hats and boots. Last year, our donors' generosity enabled us to raise a record-breaking total of nearly $400,000. The Cutting Edge™ Fiesta® Fashion Show
Don't miss UIW's 2016 Cutting EdgeFiesta® Fashion Show set for Monday, April 11 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. Experience the latest fashions created and presented by UIW's fashion design students. The Cutting EdgeFiesta® Fashion Show displays new talent set to the professional standard of a New York-style runway show. Student designers present collections they have illustrated, designed and constructed in a year-long fashion capstone course. This annual event is entirely produced by students - from sound and lighting, to staging and contracting professional models - UIW students experience every aspect of planning a professional runway show.

2016 addys awards

Pictured above is Michael Clayton, associate professor of graphic design, with graphic design students at the annual American Advertising Awards hosted by the American Advertising Federation - San Antonio (AAF-SA) chapter Saturday, Feb. 20 at the McNay Art Museum. Several students had work selected as finalists for the awards. Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards were given with those winning Student Gold and Silver Awards being advanced to district competition in Lubbock, TX. Student Judges Awards and Best of Show were also announced. UIW students took home 31 of the 35 awards given out that evening: 8 Gold, 8 Silver, 10 Bronze, and 4 Special Judges Awards as well as Best of Show. The Specials Judges Awards came with $250 each. The Best of Show winner claimed a $500 prize. UIW Graphic Design students competed against other design students from San Antonio College and Texas State University.

 

 

2016 health and wellness fair

UIW Health and Wellness Fair
UIW Health and Wellness Fair will be held from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 2 in the Wellness Center. Over 30 vendors will be on site to promote health and administer basic biometric screening. There will be music and door prizes. UIW Health Services, STARS, the Employee Wellness Committee and Human Resources sponsor the event. Red Dress Health Fair and Fashion Show Photos on Display
Please visit the student gallery in the Kelso Art Center on campus to view the photographs submitted in the Red Dress Health Fair and Fashion Show photo contest. Sculpture Display: Natural Abstraction with Industrial Elements
The community is invited to view student work designed and created as a "non-representational" sculptural form by combining both natural and industrial elements. "Survival Mindset" Information Session
The UIW Police Department and Environmental Health Safety & Risk Management will be hosting "Survival Mindset" information session. These information sessions are an overview of the original 4-hour class.

About the Training:

The current presentation teaches and promotes the "Run, Hide, Fight" concept. In today's world, each and every one of us must be responsible for our own personal safety and security. The concepts and ideas presented are not campus specific; they apply in any environment the participant may find themselves.

Each session is scheduled for 2 hours. The presentation is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, leaving 30 minutes for questions and answers. The sessions during the Spring 2016 semester will be held in the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library Special Collections Room. Seating is limited to 30 participants per session. Email colunga@uiwtx.edu if you wish to attend one of the 16 sessions listed below. Please include the date of the session you wish to attend.

The 2016 CCVI Spirit Awards Nominations
Faculty, administration, staff and students are invited to submit one or more nominations. Nominations made in previous years for persons who were not selected will be reconsidered each year. If in any year the Selection Committee determines that no suitable candidate has been proposed, the award will not be given out that year. Requesting Nominations for 12th Annual Presidential Teaching Award
Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 29 for the 2016 Presidential Teaching Award. This annual award acknowledges and rewards a full-time faculty member who exemplifies excellence in teaching leading to student engagement. Dr. Agnese presents a $5,000 stipend to the recipient. Former recipients include Dr. Roger Barnes, William Gokelman, Dr. Neeta Singh, Dr. Bill Carleton, Theresa Tiggeman, Dr. Paul Lewis, Dr. Lydia Andrade, Dr. Jessica Kimmel, Dr. Doug Gilmour, Dr. Brian McBurnett and Dr. Scott Dittloff. New Blackboard Course Shell - Coming Summer 2016
The UIW Instructional Technology team is developing a brand new Blackboard course shell for the main campus courses. The shell will include pre-formatted content for hybrid, online, and face-to-face courses. Continuing through the end of April, Instructional Technology will be previewing the new course shell to faculty and staff providing an opportunity for both faculty input and training on how to integrate the shell with your Blackboard courses. Service Learning Resources for Faculty

Rubrics 101
Rubrics can be real problem-solvers. They help us communicate our expectations to students and convey to them the objective standards that guide our grading. They also help make grading more efficient. Participants in this session will learn the typical elements of a rubric and begin constructing one for an assignment of their own. Please bring an assignment that could benefit from a good rubric and a laptop if that's convenient. The first 10 participants to sign up for each session will receive a $100 stipend. Only fulltime faculty members who teach at least one undergraduate course are eligible for a stipend. The first session is from 12 - 1 p.m. (lunch provided), Wednesday, March 2 in the Administration Building, Room 155. The second sessions is from 8 - 9 a.m. (breakfast provided), Thursday, March 3 in the Administration Building, Room 212. Dr. Amanda Johnston, director of the Writing and Learning Center is hosting this workshop. SACHS is hosting the 14th Annual Chip'n Classic from 1 - 8 p.m., Saturday, March 12 at The Republic Golf Course. The shotgun start is at 1 p.m. with a putting contest before the tournament begins.
