On Friday, Jan. 22, UIW President Dr. Lou Agnese opened the Brainpower Connection Mass. Mass included our Brainpower Connection schools Incarnate Word High School, St. Anthony Catholic High School, UIW Preparatory High School, St. Peter Prince of the Apostles School and St. Anthony Catholic School.

2016 cfk check presentation

On Friday, Jan. 15, representatives from Cardinals for Kids (CFK), a student group at UIW, presented a gift of more than $41,000 to The Children's Hospital of San Antonio. Dr. Timothy Griffin, section chief of Hematology/Oncology at The Children's Hospital, accepted the check. Students raised the funds through various CFK events in 2015, including the Winter's Eve Gala, the Cardinal Dance Marathon, and more.

2016 rosenberg school of optometry art exhibit

'The Beauty of Everyday Life' Art Exhibit Opening
You're invited to the Rosenberg School of Optometry's spring art exhibit at the RSO campus (9725 Datapoint). The exhibit opens at 6 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29. The featured artist is Cassandra Harper Baer, who grew up in Washington D.C. and recently moved to San Antonio. This show will feature her works, and provide a window into her attitude toward life and the joy in which she approaches it.All works are for sale and additional information about the artist and the works will be shared at the art exhibit opening. The Story of the Other Wise Man
The UIW Theatre Department presents the Extended Run Players production of The Story of the Other Wise Man at 7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Jan. 30 in the Ingrid Seddon Recital Hall. The production traces the travels and challenges of a fourth wise man who strives to join the other three, but meets with one delay after another. While the plot begins in the Christmas season, it ends at the Passion years later. It is a moving story that appeals because of the generosity of its hero. Ticket prices are: Adults: $10 Seniors: $9 Non-UIW Students: $8 Groups (10 or more): $6 and UIW Students, Faculty and Staff may attend free of charge. 2016 red dress health fair & fashion show

Red Dress Health Fair & Fashion Show 2016
Join us for the 2016 Red Dress Health Fair & Fashion Show from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 2 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room in support of the American Heart Association's Go Red campaign. This annual event brings awareness to women's cardiac health and features one-of-a-kind dress designs by UIW fashion students. This year's event will exhibit over 20 health and lifestyle vendors. Students from UIW's professional programs will be on hand to check blood pressures, glucose levels, provide vision screenings and offer information on the importance of maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle. Submissions Wanted: Photography Competition for Red Dress Health Fair and Fashion Show
The Red Dress Committee is excited to announce a new event to be added to the Red Dress Health Fair and Fashion Show. Faculty, staff and students are invited to submit an original photograph donation representing the color red and imagery related to the heart, heart health and/or the American Heart Association's Go Red Campaign (https://www.goredforwomen.org/). All eligible submissions will be displayed at the Red Dress Health Fair and Fashion Show where attendees will judge the photographs. A prize of $25 dollars will be awarded to the winner. All of the eligible submissions will be displayed in one of the Kelso Art Center student galleries during the month of February following the event to highlight the artwork. All eligible submissions will be available for purchase by the community and proceeds from this event will help to support future Red Dress activities. UIW Nursing Cardinal Wellness Center Open House
Join the UIW community from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the Bowden Eye and Health Institute (2547 E. The UIW Nursing Cardinal Wellness Center is a nurse managed wellness center developed by the UIW School of Nursing & Health Professions. OLLU Moody Professor at UIW
UIW Provost Dr. Kathi Light invites the UIW community to attend the Moody Professor Lecture at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3 in the Mabee Library Auditorium by OLLU Moody Professor Dr. Kathryn Anderson. Dr. Anderson, chair and professor of psychology at OLLU, has conducted research over the last 25 years on situational and personality factors that cause aggression and violence and has recently focused on violence prevention and intervention. Dr. Anderson's lecture, "Are You Threatening Me?? Tests of the General Aggression Model with Brilliant McNair Scholars," will be followed by a reception in the Mabee Library Special Collections Room. 2016 Asian New Year Celebration
Join the UIW community for the annual Asian New Year Celebration from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. The Asian New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the lunar calendar. The New Year festivities, traditionally begins on the first day of the month and continues until the fifteenth, when the moon is brightest. This year is the Year of the Monkey. 2016 Literacy Summit: Celebrating 20 Years of What's Hot in Research and Practice
The Dreeben School of Education (DSE) will host the 2016 Literacy Summit on Friday, Feb. 12 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room and Saturday, Feb. 13 in the UIW Music Building. This National event will be co-sponsored by the DSE, the Texas Association for Literacy Education, and the Specialized Literacy Professionals. Over 300 educators, literacy researchers, and pre-service teachers are expected to attend. Attendees will receive 10 CPE hours. The theme of the Summit is Literacy Research and Practice ― Celebrating 20 Years of What's Hot. Presentation topics will include the following:

  • Implementing State Standards
  • English Language Learners
  • Close Reading and Text Complexity
  • Academic Writing/Writing from Sources

The keynote speakers hold a wealth of experience about literacy instruction. Many are past-presidents of the International Literacy Association (ILA) and several have been inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame. Keynote speakers include Dr. Jill Lewis-Spector, Dr. Donald J. Leu, Dr. Linda Gambrell, Dr. Jack Cassidy, Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia, Dr. Evan Orlieb, Dr. Estanislado S. Barrera IV, Dr. Victoria Risko, Marcie Craig Post, and Guadalupe Garcia McCall (award-winning children's author). In addition, the Summit will feature children's authors Jonathan Rand, Sonia Gensler, and John Micklos, Jr. Attendees of the summit will have the opportunity to choose from over 130 presentations (i.e., 30-minute sessions, round-table discussions, and poster sessions) and to visit with vendors. 2016 cardy award

During fall break, five UIW faculty and staff members attended a two-day training course called the iPad iFilm Festival. They learned how to create, edit, and produce short videos using an iPad, a tripod, and a few simple apps. The videos were judged and the "Cardy" award for best video went to Ann Alexander at the School of Osteopathic Medicine on Friday, Jan. 15. Feik School of Pharmacy Changing of the Guard in Student Affairs
In anticipation of Dr. Kevin Lord leaving to join the School of Osteopathic Medicine in December, a national search was conducted to fill his position of Assistant Dean of Student Affairs. Dr. Amy Diepenbrock was chosen to assume that role, and was welcomed to the Feik School of Pharmacy on Monday, Jan. 11. Dr. Diepenbrock formerly served as the Director of the Civic Engagement and Career Development Center for St. Mary's University here in San Antonio. Dr. Diepenbrock earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services, with a concentration in Student Affairs Administration, from the University of Georgia in May 2005. She earned her Master of Science in Counselor Education and Student Development in Higher Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in May 2000. Her undergraduate BA in Psychology was earned from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC in May 1997. The students, faculty, administrators and staff at the Feik School of Pharmacy extend a warm welcome to Dr. Amy Diepenbrock.

Islam's Understanding of Jesus
The Department of Religious Studies presents "Islam's Understanding of Jesus," lecture from 6:15 - 8:15 p.m., Monday, Feb. 1 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. Internationally respected scholar Dr. Zeki Saritoprak, professor of Islamic Studies at John Carroll University, will explore ideas of Jesus in Islam. Dr. Saritoprak will examine the place of Jesus in the Qur'an and Hadith and discuss the important role Jesus can play in interfaith dialogue. Dr. Saritoprak's recent book Islam's Jesus (University of Florida Press) will be available. A suggested $10 donation will be appreciated for admittance to this lecture. Judy Broughton & John Lodek Scholarship Fundraising Celebration
Join the community for the Judy Broughton & John Lodek Scholarship Fundraiser Celebration at 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18 in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. Judy and John taught Interior Design at UIW for thirty-plus years. They both retired in 2015, and this scholarship has been started to commemorate their years of service. Advance ticket pricing is $35 for general admission and $15 for students. Tickets will be $40 at the door the evening of the event. 2016 salesio high school girls visit st. peters

Thestudents from our sister school in Gwanju, South Korea,Salesio High School, were invited by Marcos Fragoso, vice president of international affairs, to visit St. Peter Prince of the Apostles School on Friday, Jan. 22.

School of Physical Therapy Opens Community Clinic
The UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT) is proud to announce the opening of the SoPT Community Clinic. In keeping with the mission to serve the community, the SoPT students supervised by faculty will be providing evaluations and treatment for clients with a referral for physical therapy who are uninsured or underinsured.

2016 sopt check presentation

The students of the UIW School of Physical Therapy wanted to show their respect and appreciation for the community. The Class of 2017decided to raise money for Physical Therapy Month and give the proceeds to Rolling Inspiration,a support group for individuals with spinal cord injuries. The Founder of thisorganization isChris Salas. Rolling Inspiration was chosen as the recipient because of the dedication and ongoing support of individuals with spinal cord injuries. Dr. Caroline Goulet, dean of the UIW School of Physical Therapy, is pictured above with SoPT students, faculty and staff presenting their check to Rolling Inspiration.

The 2016 CCVI Spirit Awards Nominations

Getting Student Writing Off to a Good Start
An enormous amount of the work associated with writing takes place before the writer ever picks up a legal pad or touches a keyboard. When that preliminary thinking and planning is neglected, the resulting writing is often undeveloped or disorganized. Participants will learn techniques to help students generate good ideas and plan how they will approach a writing task. The first 10 participants to sign up for each session will receive a $100 stipend. Only fulltime faculty members who teach at least one undergraduate course are eligible for a stipend. 12 - 1 p.m., Monday, Feb. 1 (lunch) and 8 - 9 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3 (breakfast)in the Administration Building, Room 212.
