The UIW community came together during Hispanic Heritage Month’s closing event, “La Celebracion,” on Wednesday, Oct. 15, where guests enjoyed live music performances, fun games, free food and more!

 

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser

The Chi Phi Fraternity will have a table set up at Westgate Circle on Monday, Oct. 20, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to collect donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Chi Phi will sell pink Chi Phi bracelets for $1 as well as Tear Pad Slips to sign for someone who is or has fought breast cancer. All proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation; everyone is invited to wear pink and stop by to show their support! Diwali Festival of Lights

The UIW community is invited to attend the Indian festival that celebrates victory of good over evil and welcomes peace and prosperity into our hearts and minds and into the community on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 6-8 p.m. in the ICC conference hall. Sponsored by the International Student Office, Campus Life, Asian Culture Club and History Club, with special arrangements by Dr. Lopita Nath and Dr. Sushma Ramsinghani; pooja, dinner and Indian cultural performances will delight guests in attendance. Asian Tea and Coffee Culture II

Join the Institute of Word Cultures in exploring the history and culture of tea and coffee in Asia on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 3-4:30 p.m. in Marian Hall Ballroom. Arts & Music Festival

The community is invited to celebrate UIW’s arts at the Arts & Music Festival on Thursday, Oct. 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Marian Hall Student Center and at Westgate Circle. Live performances, dance and improvisational theater will be outdoors with a poetry slam and additional musical performances inside the Marian Hall Student Center where visual and wearable art will be available for purchase. Admission is free and the event is open to the public; proceeds from sales at the art gallery and coffeehouse will go to the UIW Fine Arts Building Fund. Blackout Spirit & Pep Rally

Calling all alumni! Join the biggest UIW Spirit Rally of the year! Kickoff Homecoming Week with speeches, performances and the official lighting of the alumni beacon, welcoming all alumni back to campus for Homecoming Weekend on Thursday, Oct. 23, 8-9:30 p.m. Following the ceremony, the doors to the Convocation Center will open for the Blackout Pep Rally.

Come meet your 2014-2015 Men and Women's basketball teams on Thursday, Oct. 23, 8-9:30 p.m. in the Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center. Fire Alarm System Inspection

 Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) began conducting an inspection of the fire alarm system, today, Oct. 17 at 7 a.m.  Please be advised there will be an activation of the fire alarm.  An announcement will be made by EHSRM prior to activation and when testing has concluded.  Since this is an inspection, no one will have to evacuate the building unless they see fire or smoke.  If fire or smoke is noticed, please call Campus Police at (210) 829-6030 or 911.  Please note, EHSRM and contractors will be entering office areas and rooms between 7 a.m. to possibly 5 p.m.  If you have any questions, please contact Sam McDaniel at (210) 829-6035 or Ozzie Crespo at (210) 805-3068.

 

Fall Break air conditioning interruption of service

During Fall Break, Thursday, Oct. 16 and Friday, Oct. 17, the first and second floors of the Administration Building will have no air conditioning due to a new chiller being installed.  Please contact Facilities if you have any questions at (210) 829-6023.

 

Information Resources Routine Maintenance

Information Resources Division will be conducting monthly maintenance beginning Friday, Oct. 17, 11:59 p.m through Sunday, Oct. 19, noon.

The following systems will be upgraded:

HR presents Cardinal Talent!

HR is excited to announce the new online application system, Cardinal Talent!  Cardinal Talent goes live on Wednesday, Oct. 22. In order to transition to Cardinal Talent, the old PeopleAdmin system will shut down; therefore, Tuesday, Oct. 14 is the last day to post a position on the old PeopleAdmin system; all positions will be closed on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Access to PeopleAdmin will still be available to view applicants that have applied to current vacant positions. Below are training dates and working sessions for the new system.

Writing a Philosophy of Teaching
Writing a statement of teaching philosophy serves two practical purposes: it is often needed for annual reviews, and it also helps consider how well teaching practices align with underlying goals. Presenter Barbara Millis has written and presented widely on the process of writing a teaching philosophy. Her most recent books are Cooperative Learning in Higher Education and The Course Syllabus: A Learning Centered Approach. Millis will host an interactive workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. in Mabee Library Special Collections room where she will introduce the elements of a teaching statement, show examples of effective and ineffective statements, and help participants get started in writing their own teaching philosophies. UIW faculty members include a teaching statement in the annual Faculty Self-Inventory as well as in promotion and tenure files. Lunch will be provided. Adobe Acrobat Pro Training Sessions

The Department of Instructional Technology invites faculty and administrative staff to learn how to use Adobe Acrobat Pro. This training is essential for faculty and administrative staff wishing to create interactive online forms. Michael Clayton will teach the courses with assistance from Instructional Technology staff. Adobe Acrobat Pro software will be taught in three separate sessions, each including a different topic. Sessions and topics will be on the following dates in Admin. Building Room 417.

On Sunday, Oct. 12, EAP held its 2nd Annual Fall Festival honoring current students and alumni at St. Anthony Catholic High School.  Over 250 people attended the family-friendly event.  There were a variety of games for all ages, great food, a DJ, and a silent auction to raise money for the Non-traditional Scholarship. Thanks to everyone who made the event a success!

54th Annual Texas Jazz Festival

The UIW Cardinal Jazz Band will perform on the Main Stage (AT&T) at the 54th Annual Texas Jazz Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18, 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Heritage Park in Corpus Christi. The Texas Jazz Festival is the longest running jazz festival in Texas and has been designated by the Texas State Legislature as the official jazz festival of Texas; the UIW Cardinal Jazz band has been invited back every year since its debut at the festival in 2006. The ensemble will perform original compositions and arrangements by ensemble director Jim Waller and Lead Tenor Saxophonist Roger Hogan; John Panzarella will be the featured vocalist. "I'm fine. How are you?" Candid Conversations about Mental Health
Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Maria Felix-Ortiz will lead a panel discussion on people living with mental health issues on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 3-5 p.m. in Mabee Library Auditorium. Panel members will discuss their life stories, the stigma of mental illness and how they are working, loving and how they adapt to everyday life. Reach Out Africa: Studies in Community Empowerment, Sustainable Development and Cross-Cultural Engagement

A panel of the authors will discuss the stories of collaborative partnerships that led to the transformation of individuals and communities in African development projects, on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 5:30-6:30 p.m. in Bonilla Science Hall room 129. The discussion will charter the recent book “Reach Out Africa: Studies in Community Empowerment, Sustainable Development, and Cross-Cultural Engagement,” co-edited by Dr. Kevin Vichcales and Sr. Dot Ettling. The session will also celebrate the life of Sr. Dot, co-founder of Women’s Global Connection and inspiring role model for reaching across boundaries to build a more responsible sense of global citizenship. Associate Professor of Music History Dr. Kevin Saifen invites the community to a presentation on Tuesday, Oct. 21, 7-8 p.m. in Music Building room 222 as he explores Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem.” The music still resounds today inviting humanity to peace. As part of the “Films and Conversations About Sexual and Domestic Violence” series, Associate Professor and Chair of Cultural Studies and Religious Studies Dr. Julie Miller will lead a discussion on representation of women in the media and its role in creating a culture’s ideas and behaviors towards women, with an emphasis on sexual and domestic violence.
