UIW Summer Program Introduces High School Students to Investment World

June 7, 2019

2019 Program Expanded by Popular Demand

San Antonio - The H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA) at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is excited to again host the Jefferson Bank Investor Challenge during the summer of 2019. The challenge offers high school students who are entering their senior year an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of investment strategy and to try their hand at portfolio management for a shot at winning $500.

Due to an increase in student interest, HEBSBA is hosting a second week of the challenge during the month of June. More than 40 students from San Antonio-area schools are scheduled to attend.

Students start the program with a week of classroom instruction with experienced HEBSBA faculty to cover the basics of stock symbols, the various exchanges, risk and diversification. The students are then each given a simulated online portfolio that mirrors the U.S. stock market. They research companies and buy and sell stocks in a competition to see who can increase the starting portfolio the most.

The challenge will last for approximately 20 weeks (ending December 2019) so the students can experience the natural ups and downs associated with the stock market. The winner of the challenge will receive $500 and have his or her name engraved on a plaque that is prominently displayed in UIW’s Financial Resource Center.

Important Dates:

  • Week 1 – June 10-14, 2019
  • Week 2 – June 17-21, 2019
