SAN ANTONIO – H-E-B School of Business and Administration faculty members Dr. Al Rubio and Dr. Alicia Rubio, husband and wife, became United States citizens on May 25, 2017, in a naturalization ceremony at San Antonio’s Edgewood High School.

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, the couple’s journey to becoming American citizens began when Dr. Al Rubio was granted a government-funded Fulbright Scholarship to study in the U.S. He arrived in August 1998 with Dr. Alicia Rubio joining him a year later when the two were married. They both earned a Ph.D. from Purdue University.

“I have pondered many times: ‘Why would a government invest in an individual born and living in a different country?’ I would like to think that it is because the U.S. is one of very few countries with a clear understanding of what makes a nation truly great, and that is its diversity,” Dr. Al Rubio said, speaking at the naturalization ceremony.

Dr. Al Rubio (marketing) and Dr. Alicia Rubio (finance) have been at the University of the Incarnate Word just shy of eight years. They began the official process of becoming citizens in 2011, while teaching at UIW.

"We are blessed to have the opportunity to raise our children in America. I am honored to be a citizen and I am looking forward to the responsibilities that come with it," Dr. Alicia Rubio said.

"I am rejoicing in being granted all the privileges that citizenship entails, but I am also humbled by the responsibilities that come with it. I look forward to using my talents to make America an even greater nation," Dr. Al Rubio said.
