Dr. Alejandro Velez

Economics adjunct professor Dr. Alejandro Velez will present as part of the Brown Bag Research Series on March 5, 2019, in the Nursing Building, room 105. The 60-minute presentation will begin at noon.

Dr. Velez will present on the topic of "Conflict, peace, and political risk: Colombia’s surprising resilience."

Colombia provides a teaching opportunity to understand the nature, uses, and limits of political risk measures. Political risk estimates the future ability of a country to pay back investors in terms of extra spreads or points to be paid. Adverse internal conditions such as subversion or geopolitical events such as collapsing commodity markets can sharply raise political risk, or points to be paid investors. On the other hand, did Colombia’s political risk fall after signing a historic peace accord in 2016? Are political risk measures incomplete or actually unfair or mistaken for countries with a checkered past like Colombia?

The Brown Bag Research Presentation Series is designed to promote research and draw attention to the ongoing academic exploration occurring in the H-E-B School of Business. The discussions offer faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, and members of the business community an opportunity to present their work and engage in scholarly dialogue. Brown Bag Research Presentations are offered in the Fall and Spring semesters.
