Are You Resilient? How to "Bounce Back" from Adversity

Dr. Cindy BergemanThursday, November 8, 2018

Join the H-E-B School of Business as we welcome Dr. Cindy S. Bergeman, a professor of psychology at the University of Notre, as she shares her research as part of the Hesburgh Lecture series.

Dr. Bergeman's lecture titled "Are you resilient? How to 'bounce back' from adversity" will begin at 7 p.m., Nov. 8, 2018, in the Mabee Library Auditorium.

  • More on the topic: Psychological resilience is the ability to recover readily from stress and adversity, including both major life events and chronic difficulties. Resilience is not a rare ability; in reality, it is found in the average individual and it can be learned and developed by virtually anyone.

Dr. Bergeman has research interests in stress, resiliency, and health and well-being outcomes across the adult lifespan. Her current research project uses multiple lenses (yearly questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and daily assessments) to identify and describe the various pathways through which converging behavioral, psychological, environmental, and social processes contribute to resilience and optimal functioning in later life. Unique to her perspective is the innovation in data assessment and analysis that facilitates more comprehensive understanding of the multidimensional and multilevel pathways that underlie the relations among stress and uplifts (e.g, in areas of work, family, friends, health, finances), resilience mechanisms (e.g., hardiness, control, social support), and health and well-being outcomes.
