Your Future in Theatre Arts Begins Here

The Department of Theatre Arts at University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) offers a major with a liberal arts program of study leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts. This program provides a thorough understanding of the art form, its performance conditions, representative dramatic literature and major practices--past and present. Through the study of Theatre Arts, UIW students practice critical thinking, creative problem solving, collaboration and empathy. Graduates of this program are prepared for advanced professional study in a variety of fields that respect a well-balanced liberal arts degree.

Study Theatre

UIW Theatre students in costume

UIW offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts, as well as a minor in Theatre. At UIW, Theatre Arts majors get hands-on opportunities to apply concepts and methods learned in coursework and enjoy individualized attention from their professors.

Make Theatre

We typically produce four plays a year and our students not only act in those productions, but also take on leadership roles in creating each production's costumes, scenery, lighting and sound. The Theatre Arts department views its production season as both an extension of its educational program and a site of artistic and intellectual expression to include major dramative genres and theatrical styles.

Enjoy Theatre

UIW students are encouraged to attend all Theatre Arts shows and productions with a free ticket to each event. Theatre Arts majors perform to the UIW and San Antonio community at events that usually sell out!

Be the Word in the World

Since our founding in 1881 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, we have challenged our students to think critically, explore curiously and to leverage their God-given talents to make positive impacts on their communities and the world around them.

Quality Education and Real-World Experience

Upon completion of their degree, UIW graduates are prepared to undertake specialized training in a variety of graduate Theatre Arts study areas or to pursue a career in professional theatre.

UIW is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST).
