School of Osteopathic Medicine Commencement Ceremony

Honoring the inaugural Class of 2021

Graduates of the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine will be honored at a commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 8 at 9 a.m. at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium (UIW Broadway campus). As guest tickets are limited, a livestream of the ceremony can be watched below on that day and time.


DO and MBS Graduates should arrive between 7 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. We will begin the procession precisely at 8:40 a.m. to begin the ceremony at 9 a.m. It is important that you arrive no later than 7:30 a.m. We will not be able to direct you to your appropriate seat once the procession begins.

The procession line-up will be located on the ground level of the Agnese-Sosa parking garage. Go to the check-in table upon your arrival.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. for the 9 a.m. ceremony.

Commencement will run no longer than 90 minutes. Graduates (who will recess out of the stadium) and their guests must leave the stadium immediately after the conclusion of the ceremony to allow sufficient time for cleaning and reset for the following ceremony.

Guest Parking and Arrival

  • Parking – Ancira Parking Garage
  • Entrance – 281 Frontage Road Only

No, parking permits/passes are not required for graduates or their guests.

Guests for each graduate will be expected to sit together as a group and maintain proper social distancing from other parties. There will not be assigned or reserved seating.

ADA Parking and Arrival

  • Parking – Parking lots in front of the Ann Barshop Natatorium and on the side of the tennis courts
  • Entrance – ADA parking can be accessed through the Broadway and Burr or the 281 Frontage Road entrances.

ADA seating is available in the first two rows of Benson Stadium. To allow for maximum utilization of these spaces, we ask that anyone seated in this area sit with only one other guest. Families may sit near this area if space is available. Volunteers will be available to assist ADA guests in finding appropriate seating.

Water, hair gel/spray, bobby pins and safety pins will be provided for any graduate’s last-minute needs.

As with every commencement ceremony, Sunday best attire is encouraged. However, since this event is outdoors, you should plan your attire accordingly. Due to the turf on Benson Stadium, graduates are not permitted to wear spike or thin-heeled shoes. Wedges and block-heels are allowed.

You will receive information on processional and seating upon your arrival.

All graduates should complete a COVID-19 test NO EARLIER than 5 days of the commencement ceremony. Please send your results to Hazim Thomas. Guests are not required to be tested for COVID-19, but we do ask that if they are experiencing any symptoms to celebrate virtually. We kindly request that all in-person guests take the Cardinal Daily Health Check prior to visiting campus on commencement day.

Restrooms are available for graduates in the Student Engagement Center (SEC) prior to the ceremony. Guests may use the facilities on the North and South sides of Benson stadium. Masks are required.

We kindly ask that graduates meet their guests in the parking lot following the ceremony. Guests will not be allowed on the track or field.

We are limited to five faculty who will hood learners. This will be done prior to walking on stage.

No, it is recommended that you bring few personal items as you will need to carry them with you.

Benson Stadium follows a Clear Bag Policy

Each attendee will be allowed to enter with one (1) clear plastic bag in the following styles and bag sizes:

  • Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12".
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar).
  • Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap can be taken into the venue with one of the clear plastic bags. The clutch bag cannot be larger than 4.5" x 6.5".
  • Exceptions will be made for approved medical needs items and diaper bags after proper inspection.

Guests carrying bags that do not meet the criteria will be asked to return them to their vehicles prior to entering the stadium.
